Despite the terribly good-looking boobs and asses of the bikini-clad warriors of Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad, still there are a few irritating downsides to this action-packed video game. First of all, its instructions pamphlet is woefully inadequate. This so-called user's manual hardly qualifies as such; it does not come close to comprehensively defining the features of the game, much less provide a good outline of what to expect. And no, the title, graphics and packaging are not self-explanatory. Playing the game for the first time will require quite a few brain cells and some familiarity with playing modern video games. The manual is so uninformative, to say the least. It would have been quite helpful to at least outline the capabilities of the characters, their combo features, what to expect in the game, and some pretty detailed help topics. Instead, all one gets is a scant number of pages which are duplicated in several other languages. Perhaps the deadline for the game's release came too early, giving no time to write a decent instructions manual.
Most video games which feature two players or two simultaneous scenarios would usually feature them in a top-bottom format. That is, one scenario or player is on top, while the other is below. In Onechanbara, however, the splitting of the screen for the co-op is made on a side-to-side format. That is, one is on the left and the other is on the right. One possible explanation for this deviation from the norm is so that the player will be able to view his character from top to bottom, thus fully appreciating the character in her entire feminine glory.
The biggest hurdle in enjoying the game fully is that there are no English dubbing. It is all in the Japanese language. There are English subtitles, however, so if the player does not mind reading, then it does not take the fun away from the game. New levels have lengthy introductions, with several paragraphs of extensive storyline. One will really be able to exercise one's reading in these parts. For non-readers, however (and they are legion!), these could simply be distractions that delay them from continually ogling the assets of the protagonist beauties. Barbarians still do exist in this day and age, after all.
Another major hurdle in the enjoyment of this game is the fact that there are sections of the game wherein the characters actually split up, and during these points, only one player can actually be engaged in the game. The disadvantage to this is that the second player has nothing left to do except sit and watch the first player do his stuff. Maybe this is the time for the second player to get out on the porch and have a cigarette break. A two-stick cigarette break, in fact, since such single-player levels take a bit of time. Or maybe he can pee or something. At least his bladder gets a relief from his unnatural technologically-hooked living habits.
Nevertheless, such single levels also add to the richness of the story. The second player may do well, therefore, to have his cigarette break right in front of the screen. Unless the house has a smoke detector, that is, or if Mom hates the smell of nicotine on her walls.
All in all, however, the level of gore and its plentiful eye candies are enough to make this game worthy of one's hard-earned bucks. Ultimately, though, it's up to the player to decide what video games to like or not.
