Why Chastity is Important in Christian Dating

As a Christian, you are called by God to love others and live a life of chastity, sharing yourself only with your rightful spouse. All sexual relations outside of marriage is forbidden by God and is looked upon unkindly by the Church. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 to 7 says, "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification that ye should abstain from fornication: For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness." Christian dating then encourages all Christians to eschew sex before marriage in favor of abstinence and chastity.

The Bible teaches us that sexual immorality has no place in God's kingdom. God has made marriage the only situation wherein sex can take place rightfully. Any sexual activity outside this holy institution is a sin and would only lead us to more temptation. In God's wisdom, He has carefully taught us to think of sex as part of a greater whole - that of love. Love is God's gift to us, and part of that gift is the blessing God gives to married couples: that they should share in each other's love through sex.

However, this same act, done outside marriage, destroys God's relationship with the couple. God says, "Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." (1 Peter 2:11) God's purpose in creating sex is twofold. First, God wants us, His children, to procreate. To fill the world with our children who will do His deeds and who will proclaim His glory. Second, God wants the husband and wife to discover deeper love through sex. God wants man and woman not only to have sex to procreate but also to have sex to share their very being with each other. "Sex within marriage is good, for it is foreordained by God and is blessed by God."

However, when we break God's wishes and follow our own wishes, we introduce sin into the equation. God does not want us to practice sex outside of marriage because it will only lead to heartbreak and to destruction. Sex without commitment is a deadly sin. For without commitment, there is no love, and if there is no love, then the sexual relationship shared is not one based on love but merely on lust.

Christian dating calls every Christian to practice self-restraint and observe chastity. It calls all Christians to choose their partners wisely and to refuse to be pulled into the temptations of the flesh. Scripture says, "If you love your woman, do not bring her into a sinful situation. Likewise, if you love your man, don't allow him to bring you to a situation which would be sinful in the eyes of God."

As part of Christian dating, one should be ever mindful of God's command to stay away from lustful thoughts and activity. Talking with one's partner and agreeing on setting certain boundaries will help both sides maintain a relationship that is based on mutual trust and respect.
