Author Name: Daniel Mason - MasonicStore.org
There seems to me a lot of uncertainty at large about what a Mason is and what Freemasonry is all about.
It may be easier to start by saying what a Mason is not.
Freemasonry is not a Secret Society. Masonic Temples are usually well identified and often in the middle of town – hardly a secret. Freemasonry is not a religion, though sometimes non-members do claim that Freemasonry really is a religious movement, it is not.
That said, most Freemasons do belong to an normal Church. Freemasonry is only religious in that you cannot rightly become a Mason unless he (or she) believes in the Almighty.
There is no religious test applied to the would be member to confirm this though. And new member Freemasons are not required or asked to subscribe to any religious way of thinking or creed.
In fact it is prohibited to talk about religion or politics in the Lodge – that has to be a good thing.
If there was a simple definition of what Freemasonry is all about, let me quote this from an article at MasonicWorld.com.
"Freemasonry is a fraternal organization, religious in nature, based on the ideals of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man which does charitable work in the community through its members.
In addition, its teachings and ceremonies seek to make good men better and thereby make the world a better place to live."
That's it.
Freemasonry is a voluntary society. So much so that it is against Masonic law to solicit new members. New (prospective) members must truly be there of there own free will. No coercion, no soliciting, no prompting if any kind is allowed.
Within Freemasonry there is a hierarchy of levels of wisdom and understanding, these are called "Degrees". Achieving or ascending to a Higher Masonic Degree consists of rituals and ceremonies that are a very solemn business.
They are made to impress certain fundamental teachings in a solemn and dignified way. They provide the Mason with something to build upon, and to help them be better that they are.
The bond that exists between Freemasons is famous. Non-Members often scoff and joke at some of the more idiosyncratic methods of the Masonic Oder. There jibs are based on no more that misunderstanding and perhaps fear of what they do not understand.
This Bond between Masons is based on shared knowledge and experience.
Each Freemason knows what his Masonic Brother has been through during the initiation of the degrees.
The Degrees are a right of passage, based on ideals from a simpler time.
Each Mason has accepted certain high moral and ethical standards of conduct aided via the Degrees and these truths are the bond of faith and confidence enjoyed between all Freemasons.
