Did you know that the history of sports memorabilia and other collectibles began with baseball sports cards? Yes! In the 1800s, these cards were inserted inside the boxes of tobacco as form of marketing technique. Later on, it was adopted by other products such as soaps and bubble gum wrappers. The "Mona Lisa" of all sports cards, the T-206 Honus Wagner, was actually one of the promotional cards given away by tobacco companies then.
From the start of World War II until 1950, the production of sports cards stopped. Then, in 1952, the cards came back to business. Topps, a chewing gum manufacturer, made sets of original collectible cards which had color portraits of baseball players, logos, and other information such as biographies and statistical details. Compared with those made by the tobacco companies, the bubble gum cards were bigger and more remarkable. Hence, Topps cards are considered the first true set of baseball cards. Since then, other manufacturers followed suit.
These days, sports collectibles are no longer limited to baseball cards. When you say "collectibles," they may now refer to a wide selection of merchandise. The most popular being the following:
Rookie cards-Some people say that rookie cards refer to cards that feature athletes for the first time while others say that the term is used when it is the first time of a manufacturer to create such cards. Actually, the safe definition of the term is that these are cards which feature certain players during their rookie year in the sport.
Autographed cards-Signed and certified sports cards are undoubtedly one of the hottest sports memorabilia. No matter how minute it is, an autograph can add a lot more value to a collectible. However, you should understand that not all autographed cards are certified. When they are not, they don't belong to the classification "memorabilia." But, they can still be classified as sports collectibles.
Graded cards-These are cards evaluated, authenticated, and certified by independent card grading services. These graders check every bit of the cards such as their centering, corners, borders, surface, condition, and eye appeal. Those which receive high grades are charged higher too.
Vintage cards-These are the cards produced before the 80s. Due to their age, they are considered valuable and highly collectible. Some people purchase cards like these as form of investment. Eventually, they intend to resell the cards at a much higher price.
Uniforms-Jerseys (of whatever sports) are now considered memorabilia. They can cost as much as thousands of dollars.
Equipment-Sporting tools such as helmets, bats, balls, gloves, and the likes are also part of sports collectibles or memorabilia. In 2006, a hockey stick which was said to be the oldest in the world (1850s), was sold for $2.2 million. Amazing, right?
Bobbleheads-These sports memorabilia are collectible dolls with oversized heads attached to bodies by a spring. They are the most collected bobbleheads of all time.
