Literally, wushu is taken to mean "martial methods." It has become an official and widely popular sporting event in recent times. It is a sport that is both full-contact was well as an exhibition. As an exhibition, it boasts of graceful moves and lavish and stylish Chinese attire that are not traditional sportswear.
Wushu's origins are traced from Chinese boxing or Chinese traditional martial arts. The formation of the sport after 1949 is a move to make the practice of wushu and Chinese traditional martial arts an official national sporting event. Most of Taolu, or the contemporary forms of competition, were formulated by committees appointed by the Chinese government based on their traditional parent arts.
Through the IWUF or the International Wushu Federation, the wushu sport has become internationally renowned and recognized in modern times. Every two years, the IWUF conducts the so-called World Wushu Championships. These events began in 1991 in Beijing.
The All-China Wushu Association was created by the government in 1958 in order to regulate the training in martial arts. The lead was taken by the Chinese State Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, creating standard forms for the majority of the routines and events. It was during this period that a national system for wushu was established. This included curriculum for teaching and training, standardization of forms and grading of instructors. There is no strict sportswear for wushu, nor is there a standard sportswear aside from being traditional martial arts or Chinese attire. The discipline of wushu was introduced at the levels of both high school and college. The State Commission created in 1979 a task force dedicated to practicing and teaching wushu.
The year 1986 saw the establishment of the Chinese National Research Institute of Wushu. It became the state authority for wushu activities administration and research in China. However, in 1998, varying policies in government and attitudes in sports led to the abandonment of the national sports authority. This was perceived as an attempt to remove the politicization of organized sports in part, and to gear the policies of Chinese sports to an approach that is more market-driven. This resulted in the promotion of both modern and traditional wushu in the present.
Two disciplines mainly comprise the sport of competitive wushu. The first is Sanda, and the second is Taolu. Sometimes, Sanda is also called Lei Tai or Sanshou. It is a sport and fighting technique with a heavy influence of Chinese traditional boxing, Chinese methods of wrestling, as well as other Chinese techniques of grappling. Shuai Jiao is a form of Chinese wrestling while Chin Na is a Chinese grappling style.
Sanda is characterized by its wushu combat aspects. It is a discipline that involves moves similar to Muay Thai and kickboxing, combined with a lot of techniques of grappling. Both Sanda and Taolu tournaments are held together most of the time.
In contrast, Taolu is a discipline that comprises of patterns and maneuvers of martial arts that are judged in accordance with specific guidelines and rules. Its forms are composed of basic fighting movements like kicks, stances, punches, jumps, balancing, throws, and sweeps. These movements are based on traditional styles of Chinese martial arts. They can be modified accordingly during competitions to highlight the strengths of the player.
Taolu competition forms are performed under time limits. External martial art styles can be as short as one minute and twenty seconds, while internal arts can last for up to five minutes or more. Modern players of wushu are currently training more and more in aerial techniques like multiple-degree kicks and jumps, in order to diversify style and provide a higher level of performance in their routine.
