Whereas a publisher has a number of eBook file formats to choose from, an online eBook shopper also faces the challenge of selecting the correct file format which can be read by his or her device, such as an iPad or Kindle. With the phenomenal rise of the eBook market, numerous file formats have been introduced, most of which were specially formatted to be read only by one device. However, some of these formats have been discontinued while others have been added into other devices. So far, five major formats for eBooks have emerged from the format wars and are currently enjoying widespread use.
Five major eBook formats
Kindle. Based on the Mobipocket standard, the Kindle format has options for book locking under Digital Rights Management (DRM). The use of DRM enables a retailer to lock an eBook to a user's device, thus avoiding the risk of unauthorized distribution. eBooks created for the Amazon Kindle has a proprietary file extension (.azw).
ePub. This open-standard eBook format was developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum. As of 2011, it has become the most widely supported independent eBook format. The ePub format uses Adobe Content Server for its DRM. ePub eBooks have a file extension (.epub). Examples of devices which support this eBook format include:
- iOS devices (iPhone, iPodTouch, and iPad);
- SonyReader
- Android-enabled devices
- Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7 (Freda)
- PC (Mozilla Firefox EPUBReader add-on
- Barnes and Noble Nook
eReader. An early player during the eBook format wars, this eBook format was initially developed for Palm Digital Media and other Palm applications. This file format is readable on the following devices:
- iPhone
- PalmOS
- WebOS
- Android
- Symbian
- BlackBerry
- Windows Mobile
- desktop PC
- Macintoch PCs
Barnes and Noble's Nook Reader is currently using the eReader format for their eBooks. This eBook format uses the file extension (.pdb). eReader files are locked using its native DRM capability.
Adobe PDF. Also known as Portable Document Format, this format was developed by Adobe Systems as a standard for printable documents. Today, it is widely used throughout the World Wide Web since it is provided free by Adobe. These files can be read on almost all computer systems. Amazon Kindle and SonyReader can use the file without the need for conversion.
PDF files are supported by a number of eBook readers which include SonyReader, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, and iPad, to name a few. This file format is easily recognizable with the (.pdf) file extension. DRM options include native and Adobe Content Server.
BBeB. Also known as Broadband eBooks, this file format was developed by Sony Corporation as a proprietary format for its SonyReader. It utilizes two file extensions, (.lrf) and (.lrx). An ebook with the (.lrx) extension signifies that the file is locked by DRM.
