Mid Willamette valley vineyards have developed a reputation for producing some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in the world as well as a superior Pinot Gris. The Willamette Valley American Viticultural Area is the largest AVA in the state, encompassing 5,200 square miles, and is home to most of the state's wineries. The Willamette Valley AVA is divided into six sub-regions, each of which has its own distinct soils, climates and elevation. The area is also noted for its wide diversity of wines, each of which has its own defined character despite their vineyards being only a short distance apart.
The Chehalem Mountains AVA was established in 2006 and covers 70,000 acres stretching from Wilsonville to Forest Grove, of which more than 1,600 acres are given over to vineyards. There are more than 100 vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA as well as 31 wineries. The AVA also has the three main hillside soil types that are ideal for grape cultivation, including the ocean sedimentary, basaltic and blown lake bed sediment (loess).
The Dundee Hills AVA is located in the hills north and west of Dundee. Covering 12,500 acres, 1,700 acres of which are cultivated with grapes. The area is home to more than 50 mid Willamette valley vineyards which are protected from ocean climates by the elevated Coast Range of mountains. In particular, the area has become known for its superior Pinot Noir as several Dundee Hills wineries have become internationally recognized.
The Eola-Amity Hills AVA covers an area some 15 miles long by 6 miles wide and stretches from Amity in the north to the capital Salem in the south. Grape production in the area benefits from the steady winds coming from the Pacific Ocean that reaches the Valley through the Van Duzer Corridor. Some 1,300 acres of the nearly 40,000 acre AVA are given over to vineyards and the soils are mainly composed of volcanic basalt produced by ancient lava flows as well as marine sedimentary rocks and alluvial deposits.
The McMinnville AVA was founded in 2005 and runs from McMinnville to Sheridan, making up close to 40,500 acres. McMinnville is home to 523 acres of vineyards as well as 14 wineries. Lands in the area have altitudes that range from 200 ft to 1,000 ft and the soil is uniquely suited for growing grapes as they are shallow and composed mainly of uplifted marine sedimentary lifts and loams.
The Yamhill-Carlton District AVA was established in 2005 and has over 1,200 acres of vineyards in its close to 60,000 acre total area. The AVA features distinctive conditions for viticulture as it has some of the oldest soils in the Valley, with coarse-grained marine sediments dominating its composition.
The Ribbon Ridge AVA encompasses an area of 3,350 acres and measures 3.5 miles long and 0.25 miles wide. The area is distinguished by larger landmasses that surround the area and protect the climate as well as ocean sedimentary soils. At present an estimated 500 acres of the AVA is given over to 20 mid Willamette valley vineyards although some 1000 acres is seen as being suitable for grape cultivation.
