One of the most important things to consider when considering weight loss diets is the kind of approach they take. Keep in mind that the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to maintain healthy eating habits as well as a regular exercise program. Here are some of the common approaches taken by diet programs:
Glycemic Index. These weight loss diets rely on maintaining your blood sugar levels by eating foods with a low glycemic index. The glycemic index measures how long it takes a certain food to break down in the body and be converted to glucose. Low GI diets rely on increasing your intake of foods such as low fat yogurt and vegetables (i.e. eggplant, celery, spinach) and reducing high GI foods such as white bread and snack foods such as pretzels and corn chips.
Lifestyle change diets. These weight loss programs encourage you to make permanent lifestyle changes to enable you not only to lose weight but also keep it off. Examples of lifestyle changes include eating more fruits and vegetables and embarking on a regular exercise program.
Low calorie diets. These is the typical approach taken to dieting, in which the dieter lowers their calorie intake for the period of the diet by reducing the amount of food they are eating. Typically, you are reduced to 400 to 800 calories a day, usually on a mostly liquid diet. These crash diets are usually undertaken by people who need to lose weight fast for health reasons. However, they should only be undertaken under the supervision of your doctor.
Meal replacement diets. These programs replace your normal diet with one recommended by the diet provider. For example, instead of your normal lunch you ll have a nutritional shake instead or replace your dinner with a meal bar or a specially prepared meal. You can make these special meals based on recipes provided to you by the diet program or order them ready made. Generally, only two meals will be replaced by special diets while the third meal will be composed of foods you choose as long as you stay within the set calorie guidelines.
Low carbohydrate/high protein diets. The principle behind these diets is similar to GI diets in that it requires you to eliminate foods rich in refined carbohydrates such as white bread and breakfast cereals that can increase your insulin levels. At the same time, the diet may allow you to eat foods rich in protein such as red meats, poultry and eggs. Doctors have warned that these diets come with health risks such as high cholesterol levels and kidney failure.
Low fat diets. These diets work by cutting down the amount of fat to around 20|of your total daily calorie intake. While reducing the amount of fat in your diet can be healthy, it can also lead to weight gain if you don t restrict your calorie intake.
When choosing from among weight loss diets approaches, make sure you pick one that you feel comfortable with so that you ll be able to follow it for life and stay at your desired weight.
