Are you remodeling your kitchen, and are interested in installing new countertops? If so, you have come to the right place. Although countertop installation can be a time consuming kitchen installation project, it is rather easy to complete. With these simple instructions, you will learn how to install a laminate countertop yourself. No need to call a professional with these step by step directions.
Step 1:
The first thing you need to do is remove the sink as well as any accessories or fixtures that are part of your countertop. Now, using kraft paper, carefully trace the holes that were made by these fixtures. If you intend on using the same fixtures again then you will need this to cut out these shapes. The next step is removing the drawers and setting them aside.
Step 2:
Now it is time to take off the old countertop. To begin this, you will remove all of the screws that are attached to the mounting brackets. If applicable, remove all of the retaining clips and screws if your countertop is an older version. Then, using a utility knife you need to cut the caulk bead in the areas where the caulk is on the wall or backsplash. Now that the countertop is loose, slowly lift up the cabinets to remove them. If they are too heavy, be sure to ask for someone's assistance.
Step 3:
Now it is time to install your new countertop. The home improvement store that you purchased your countertop from will conveniently have your countertop ready in as many sections as you desire, according to what works best for you. Also, per your request, fasteners will be installed in order for you to reassemble it easily and tightly. Make sure that you check the material over well in order to be sure that all the parts fit well. Additionally, if you request, the home improvement center can help you assemble some of the more difficult corners and areas that you may have trouble assembling.
Once this has all been checked, it is time to put your new countertop into place. Be certain that it is level and perfect aligned after lifting it into place. If needed, use wooden shims as a way to fill any gaps that you may have along the top of the cabinets, or underneath the counter. After you have carefully placed the countertop into the right position, then it is time to replace all of the mounting brackets, and then the screws. One important step to be aware of is to watch and make sure that you do not hit or penetrate the surface of the counter.
Step 4:
To finish the project, you need to use a jigsaw and cut holes in the countertop for the sink. In order to prevent the surface from becoming chipped you should take a utility knife and score the cutout line. Then, using a jigsaw blade, drill the pilot hole. Of course if you are using your old sink, make sure that it fits properly back in the right place. After this, go ahead and install the sink and then properly connect the drain lines back together. To finish this kitchen installation project, take your caulking and apply to the countertop or backsplash where there is a gap. Let dry and your new kitchen counters will be perfect. Your kitchen installation project is now complete.
