If you are looking to install some replacement windows, here is a step by step guide to help you through the process. Just remember that safety is always the number one key.
Take out everything that deals with the old window which includes the storm window and moldings. You can do this with a hammer and wood chisel and some minimal cutting may have to be needed so keep that in mind. You can actually use some of that molding for later use so keep it handy. Remove any of that glass and dispose of it.
Clean out the area of any debris and make sure you cover up holes or remove any other things that will get in your way. Start caulking the blind stop areas and that means the stool edge also. Put the window in place.
After putting the window in its place, secure it with cedar shims. You can do this with a hammer and do so about every foot. Make sure the window is completely level and you can do this with a carpenter's leveling tool.
Make sure that you fasten it securely using galvanized screws and screw them right through the window's casing and directly into the frame. Try not to screw too deep. There is a such thing as overdriving.
Installing the drip cap is next on the list and this is so that you keep the water from getting into the frame.
This is an important step-frame the window with insulation and do so from the inside with fiberglass wool. You will place it near the casing with a bar or possibly a shim. You can use a foam and it can save you money. Start caulking after you are done.
Next step is cutting shims off and you can do this by using a utility knife and this is just for any of the insulation that you see that stands out from the window or wall.
Nailing the brick molding is next and you should do that about every foot also using galvanized nails. You can also use caulk to cover the heads of the nails.
Now the interior moldings need to be installed. Do so all around the window and with a mitre box, cut all of the mold off and put everything in place with nails.
It may seem like it is a tough job but it is maybe a one day job depending on how many windows you have. It is not very hard to change out windows despite what you may think or what you have been told. If you do not feel comfortable, you should always seek the help of a professional and they can point you in the right direction or possibly do the job for you.
