There is a secret to choosing exterior siding and it comes in the form of hardboard siding, otherwise known as "Masonite". In fact, this type of siding has become very popular because it is much cheaper than other types of siding. But like every other type of siding, you have to maintain it or you will eventually have to replace it earlier than expected. Many houses that you come across may seem like they are brick but in fact they are brick veneer. This just makes it much cheaper for the homeowner but gives the same appeal as brick would. However in the case of major storms it would not hold up as well as brick would which is the major downfall of any type of siding. If you decide to get any type of siding you must be aware that the siding will not be air tight because the siding has to be able to breathe. This means that it has to have room to expand in the summertime and detract in the wintertime. In the 19th century, wood would be overlapped over each other and that would provide the ventilation needed and there would be no need for any spacing. However, in today's ever changing climate issues moisture can accumulate and siding can trap mold and mildew and the siding will start to decay from the inside.

If you are using plywood or masonite siding, you will have to use what professionals call a "groove and tongue" arrangement. This belongs where the conjoined boards will go. Don't pack any of the boards closely together because of the elements may cause the boards to swell and that will cause more problems than you started with. If your siding is properly set in, chances are you won't have any problems for years except for the fact that regular vinyl siding will fade so painting might have to go on your "to do" list. You might also want to keep your eye on how your siding contracts and expands during the seasons.

If you have aluminum siding, painting is very important because it gives it a fresh and new look. However, it is very easy to dent especially if something hits it. Aluminum and vinyl siding do not breathe very well and that will cause excessive amounts of mold and other issues if they are not properly installed. Wood siding is a very good choice if you decide you do not want to have to put up with the mold issue. There are plenty of wood choices to choose from however these are not real wood planks; they are replicates so keep that in mind when choosing your siding.
