Rail transport modelling is a fast growing hobby. It provides hours of fun, stimulates your creative energies, and teaches you history too. The idea of collecting model trains, arranging tracks, building layouts is all very attractive and quite simply, very tempting to do. And if you have a friend or a family member joining you in your hobby, railway modelling becomes a much better activity. It certainly promotes bonding between father and son or grandfather and grandson.
The first thing you need to realize when starting railway modelling is that this is a multi-disciplinary hobby. You need to be a bit of everything in order to really build a very good layout. Electrician, carpenter, painter, historian - each of these four skills would be required at one time or another while building your railway.
But the three basic competencies you really need are cardboard and foam cutting, gluing, and painting. These are the three activities you will be performing most of the time. Of course, you'll also need a bit of artistic skill to make your model look very good, but a well-functioning railway is your first objective. For that, you need to build a great base and good track.
Planning your layout
Before anything else, you need to prepare your layout. Make a sketch or use a software program to design a layout. You may wish to create an entirely fictional railway setting or you can choose to recreate a real place or a historical setting. Once you have finished the plan for your layout, you can start gathering the materials and equipment needed. Your model trains will of course need to match the tracks you are going to use. It will also have to correspond to the time period you are recreating. Pick terrain objects that compliment your layout. If it is in a desert, then you need cacti, rocks, some desert animal, etc. If you're in the city, then you need some traffic lights sign, road sign, mailbox, etc.
Constructing the layout
Forming the base is your first concern. You need to cut up the base. Decide on the size of your railway and cut up the foam board in the size you have decided. Once finished, check if the base is stable . Put it on a table and arrange the tracks based on the layout you have designed. Try to run the model trains on the tracks to see if they run properly and they do not fall off. If you want to build tunnels, or mountains, or bridges, or any other terrain designs, now is the time to do it, while your tracks are not yet fixed in place.
Once you're finished, you can now fix the tracks in place. Then you can start painting the base and the entire terrain. Once the paint has dried, you can move on to putting the buildings, and other things like railroad signs, cars, people, on the base. Use glue as necessary. Then just add more detail as you want and watch your railway model grow.
