Railway modelling is more than just buying model trains, arranging them in a predetermined layout, and displaying them for everyone to see. Railway modelling is an art wherein the most absorbed hobbyists build layouts that are realistic, well grounded, and historically correct. While most hobbyists construct their layouts using commercially available trains, tracks, and accessories, the more hard-core hobbyists will add their own touch to their layout by adding their own homemade accessories and retouching the paint job on their trains and tracks.
Landscaping
Often times called "scenery building" or "scenicking," landscaping is the art of modelling a layout based on actual or imaginary location. Terrain and buildings are prepared and added to the layout. Signs, trees, bushes, and fences are added to make the layout even more genuine. Trains go into tunnels, bridges, and mountains to make the layout even more detailed. Ponds and other bodies of water are added to the base to make the layout even more realistic.
Weathering
Weathering is another method used by modelers to make their layout more authentic. Model trains usually come out of the box in pristine condition, looking very brand new. However, in reality, modellers might want their trains to look beaten up, slightly weathered, or used to make it appear more realistic. After all, trains in deserts don't look in gleaming condition; neither do trains that run in coalmines. Therefore, dirt, grime, and soot all have to be simulated in order for the train to look the way they would look in real life.
Consistency
When designing the layout, you have to be consistent with your design. You don't put up a sign from the 1960s, when you're building a layout of the 80s era. Likewise you don't put in cars, buildings, or other objects in the layout that come from different periods. Example: a 1960s Ford model car and a 1980 Honda car, while your theme is the Wild West. No one would believe that. Of course, this philosophy applies even more importantly to the trains you are modelling. If you're recreating a certain era, be sure that the model trains you are using represent that era.
Building your layout
The base of your layout would more than likely be white polyfoam board, also called beadboard. Beadboards are the ideal base for layouts as they are easy to handle, easy to cut and shape, and releases no odor or chemicals when cut. It is also conducive for painting and for gluing other objects.
Once you are done with your base, the fun begins. Place the tracks, trains, and other accessories onto the base. Place them based on the design you drew beforehand. If you're recreating a historical place or an actual place from the real world, then you need to stick to the exact details from the picture of the place you are recreating. It would be better if you have pictures of the place from different angles. Be creative in your design. Look for old signs and ads in old magazines and newspapers. Don't rush it. Just have fun and finish the layout in your own time.
