The term scale indicates the difference in size of a model and the actual thing that it imitates. It infers that there is a corresponding proportion in decrease of the whole train and its parts, so that on its own scale, a model is a faithful and accurate reproduction of the larger original. Scale is usually expressed in the form of a ratio , such as 1:25, which means, in this case, that a model train is 25 times smaller than the real locomotive it is imitating.
This scale concept is significantly important. In addition to being dictated by space, personal preferences, and budget, the scale of the train also affects the corresponding landscape which it is in. In other words, the mountains, houses, trees, and everything else around which a model train runs should also roughly be proportionate to the scale of the train. This is for the sake of realism in the set.
Having a smaller space may mean having a smaller scale model train, but increasing the number of loops of the train track may compensate for the smaller space. It is important to determine the conditions before deciding what scale model to buy. Making a temporary layout and making the bare measurements will help a lot in determining the best scale.
Model trains have their own terminologies when it comes to scale. Here are some of them and a few of their features and characteristics.
G-Scale or Large Scale. Trains in the G scale size are suitable for indoor as well as garden environments. Sturdy trains are available which can withstand rain, cold and heat. This scale is the biggest of all model trains, typically 1:22.5 to 1:24 in size.
O-Scale. This scale is smaller than the G-scale, and it is a popular choice. It is 1:48 in size. Under the O scale is the On30, which is an O scale model train running on an HO track. This scale is ideal for a Dept.56 village.
HO-Scale. This is the most popular of all scales. In this size, there are innumerable kinds of model trains available, as well as a huge selection of model sceneries, structures, vehicles and people suited for it. It only needs moderate space and is also suitable for tabletops. It is well worth to consider this scale as HO trains are very detailed and accurate, and thus very valuable. It is 1:87 in size.
S-Scale is next in size at 1:64. It is not too common, but it is the ideal balance between size and detail.
N-Scale. This scale is also quite popular and is 1:160 in size, the second smallest scale. Even at its small size, however, it is still quite detailed. It is ideal if the hobbyist desires a long, winding track with lots of focus on the surrounding sceneries. It is ideal for both huge landscape layouts and limited spaces. This scale is next only to HO in popularity. N scale equipment is a bit more expensive, however.
Z-Scale. This is the smallest scale in model trains, and these trains are also very detailed. Its size also makes it ideal for smaller spaces. Although it is not quite popular among hobbyists due to its tiny scale, expensive price and limited availability of its accessories, it is quite a good conversational item.
