As the incidences of Diabetes continue to increase, more people are curious as to what is Diabetes. The word in fact refers to a collection of diseases, all of which are related to how well the body uses blood sugar, also called blood glucose.
A body's blood sugar means the level of sugar that is in the blood stream. Also called the body's glucose level, it is important because glucose is the primary source of energy for the body's cells. When a glucose level is persistently too high, a state called hyperglycemia, the conditions for suffering from one of the Diabetes mellitus diseases is present.
There are two main types of this disease, simply named Type 1 and Type 2. However, they are quite different. There is also a condition known as prediabetes. This describes that state of one who doesn't yet have the disease, but have reversibly high glucose levels. There is also a condition called gestational diabetes that can affect pregnant women.
Juvenile Diabetes, or the Type 1 version, affects young children. To get the condition, a child must have both a genetic predisposition for it and go through a triggering event that keeps the child's body from producing enough insulin. This version of the disease is not curable, but it can be treated with insulin injections. So while associated with children, those who have it do become adults with the Type 1 disease.
Adult On-Set Diabetes, or Type 2 of the disease, generally occurs as a result of obesity or lifestyle factors that can lead to obesity, such as high fat diets and low physical activity. In the Type 2 version of the disease, the body becomes insulin resistant, meaning insulin is produced but the body's cells don't respond to it. This type of the disease is curable, most especially with serious lifestyle changes.
Because the Type 2 version of the disease is generally caused by lifestyle choices, you can often prevent it before it full arrives. Before the full On-Set version occurs, you would be suffering from a condition called prediabetes. This means your blood glucose levels are higher than they should be, but not yet high enough to have the full disease. If you're made aware you have prediabetes, you can resolve it with the same better lifestyle choices that would reverse the full Adult On-set version.
A full list of what is Diabetes must include Gestational Diabetes. This occurs when a pregnant woman doesn't produce the increased levels of insulin she and her baby need during pregnancy. This leads to hyperglycemia. The mother doesn't generally show any symptoms, so you must be tested to find it. Having the condition makes both mother and child more susceptible to Type 2, but the gestational Diabetes can be treated.
