If you're a parent, you've undoubtedly experienced being badgered by your kids to buy them action figures. Probably one of those currently popular characters or superheroes starring on TV shows. And as you relent , your kid shouts in joy and points you to the TV or the internet, whichever is more appropriate, and shows to you the action figure they want. As you watch the show or browse the internet, you get a heart attack at the prices these action figures carry.
Before you endure another heart attack and fits of apoplexy, sit down, relax, and take a deep breath. Then console yourself that the prices you saw were probably prices of collector items; action figures in mint condition and never taken out of the box. That's right. These little figures that you think are just toys trade their weight in gold when they're never opened.
But your kid is not after those collector items, is he? So just go pass them and go over to the next toys in line. They're just the same action figure except they're not meant to be collected. They're meant to be played with, taken out of their boxes, their arms and legs moved and probably maimed or dismembered. You know the drill right? After all, you used to play with the same toys.
Classic vs. New
So here you are, presented with a choice to buy your child action figures. You look at one aisle and you see the classics: Spiderman, Incredible Hulk, GI Joe, and Captain America. Then you look at the other aisle and you see the new wave of toys: Ben 10, Avatar, Gundam, Dragonball, and Harry Potter. Invariably , your child will recognize the new wave of superheroes more than the classic ones you knew. So resist that temptation to wax nostalgic and pick the ones you grew up with. Rather, be in tune with your child's interests and find out what shows they are watching. If you've been carefully observing, you'll know which to buy simply from the TV shows they watch.
Choose a size appropriate for your child
The smaller action figures are more suitable for older kids. The younger a child is, the bigger the action figure they need; to avoid choking hazards, and to allow them to play with the toy more easily, since a bigger toy will allow them to manipulate the limbs easier. As they grow older, they'll tend to want the smaller models. They may even start collecting action figures as a hobby. The important thing is to teach your child the value of taking care of their toys and the joys of playing with their imagination while playing with these toys.
Villains while good additions for older kids' collections, are not suitable at all for younger kids. It's much better that you buy them the heroes first until they're old enough to distinguish the difference between the bad guys and the villains. It's also important that you guide your kids appropriately when they're playing. Most of these toys take their background from TV shows that need parental guidance.
