Many jewelry designers are specialists in gem cutting and jewelry design. Yet few of them approach the success of some their most successful counterparts. Jewelry designing, it seems, is more than just cutting stones and designing jewelry pieces. The most successful jewelry designers have understood long ago that jewelry designing is more than just design and craftsmanship. There's also a bit of tradition and art involved in creating each piece.
Giving soul to each piece created
Successful designers understood that sometimes, beauty is more than just what the eye sees. Sometimes it's also what the heart feels. Creating a piece that evokes a kind of passion to the wearer and to the viewer is a talent few designers possess. Still rarer is the ability to create pieces that generate legends and myths. Pieces that create stories all by themselves.
Jewelers and artisan both
Jewelry designers must both be a gem cutter and an artisan. He must both be a designer and a consumer as well. A jewelry designer must understand the inner workings of both the gem and the wearer. He must see to it that the gem show off its beauty yet not overwhelm the wearer's own beauty. The jewel must be exquisite yet still show off the wearer's own grace.
Unique pieces
It is a master jeweler who recognizes that demand comes when supply is limited. For jewelry designers to be successful, they must be able to create as many unique pieces as possible. Repetition is boring, and designs that are produced in the hundreds would diminish a jewel's value. The master jeweler must then be able to produce pieces that are unique from each other. Yet the designer must also forge a collection with a common theme. The challenge is in creating a collection with a unity that forges them together yet with a uniqueness that sets them apart individually.
Functionality
A jewel must not only be attractive, it must also be wearable. For what function can a jewel have except to be worn by people? Jewelry must then be functional as well as aesthetic. It must conform to accessory standards and be flexible enough in design that it can complement a variety of wardrobe styles. It must be elegant without appearing tacky, conspicuous but not ostentatious, and simple yet captivating.
Being business savvy
More than business of creating jewelry pieces, jewelry designers must be savvy with the business of selling the jewelry itself. They must be proficient in the jewelry business itself. Selling is an art itself, and if the jeweler cannot sell his collection, he is no different from a failed designer.
Opening stores, creating branches, jewelry chains, expanding nationwide or worldwide - these are jobs which a designer, if he is not up to the task, must delegate to someone competent so that the company can thrive.
Making decisions that will grow the company is part of an executive's job. There are jewelry designers who are both company executive and jewelry designer. They are a small and rare bunch of designers.
