Late Fall in 2011 I went to the Doctor for my once a year company health assessment. I weighed in at 226 pounds with empty pockets and no shoes on. That's an atrocious 35 pounds over my maximum allowable body weight, according to the U.S. Military, my employer. It's also a depressing 51 pounds higher that I ultimately want to be.
Right after that, in October, I weighed in for my semi-annual inspection. I came in at an enormous 30% body fat. I was so over fat that the medical tech who administered my weigh-in crumpled up my weight sheet and told me that I was in danger of being discharged immediately if he turned this in. I was going to lose my job for being obese. That was a somber reality.
Today is 19 days since I was looking at the possibility of losing a career of 12 years, I'm 15 pounds lighter, and I've dropped 20 pounds since my original visit to the clinic. My waist is 2" smaller and my neck came down an inch, getting me back down to my normal shirt size. I have fought chubbiness since I can remember noticing the opposite sex, and finally I have found the formula that is bringing me down the road of fit and sexy!
I want to share briefly, but leave you with an ugly warning also. I've lost 20 pounds, but I still do not look fit! I worked on four distinct things that have brought me to this weight loss so far, though.
One: I consumed only fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. That is all. No cheese. No yogurt. No hot cereal. I enjoyed avocados, carrots, cucumbers, grilled veggies, pumpkin, chicken, lean beef, beets, artichoke hearts, ect. I tried to make it an assortment, and I made certain that I was eating plenty of energy. I supplemented with fish oil and olive oil if I thought I didn't take in ample calories one day.
Two: I drank Plenty of water. Water, and more water, and then a little water. Water with lemon, water with vanilla extract. I sipped as much water as I could manage to take in. I permitted myself to enjoy coffee, but since it's a diuretic, it sends you to the bathroom quite a bit. I didn't forego the black coffee, but I forced myself to drink at least 3 litres of h2o, and work with the toilet breaks.
Three: I did NOT get crazy on workouts. I used the tiny gym on site with my company. I was in and out of it within 15 minutes, at most three times per week. It was generally only twice a week, and all I did was kettle bell swings and lat pulldowns. I tried to 100 kettle bell swings split up, but generally settled with 80. Be ready for a blasted back and glutes! Make sure you stretch those out.
Four: I didn't allow myself to think about anything fancy. This one is not easy to explain. I didn't want to refer to it as a diet. I didn't name it, even though people could place it into one of a few followings (Paleo, Atkins, Slow Carb, ect), and I didn't weigh myself every day. I didn't take before pics, I didn't do lab work, I didn't set goals, nor a time limit. I just wanted to lose weight, and that's still all I'm after.
I deliberately didn't subscribe to any gimmicks because I've done all that before. I didn't sell myself on the Beach Something program to get ripped. I didn't start with any six-pack abs system. I didn't even start a regular about it (in the back of my head though, I knew I wanted to talk about my progress.) The simplest way of putting this is that I started doing it for me, and I also started doing it for my health and personal fulfillment.
I consumed food to fuel my body, and thought of food as just that. I broke the thought of food as a tasty indulgence, or emotional crutch, or thing to do when I'm bored. Now my body is taking care of itself. I've lost 20 pounds, and I look forward to my next 20 melting off!
