So you finally you've gotten your mic; all that's left for you to do is to set up the whole thing - or not. You may have condenser and dynamic microphones, a $500 preamp, an amplifier, guitars, mixers, synth and the home recording software ready. You can actually pull it off. You can start making music. But you may want to do more than just "pull it off". After all, you can be stellar. You can set up the whole shebang really well - and that can be done if you know what your options are for mic accessories.
Pop Filters
What do you need pop filters for? There are certain vocal sounds such as that of D in double, p in perks, and the B in break that produce what speech specialists (and pop filter salesmen) call "popping plosives". Making these sounds will result to a small puff of air being pushed. Now, that is not such an ordeal under normal situations, but to a recording mic, those pops are not just pops - they are explosions. There really is no simple way around the problem, except when you are someone who's really good at writing song lyrics with no Ps, Ds, and Bs. The good news is that there is a way - you can get yourself a pop filter. These mic accessories will soften that "puff" of air and would allow the sound to travel through, effectively leading to a pop-free track.
Microphone Windscreen
A windscreen is usually used for outdoor recording. In most cases its a foam sheath that fits over the mic capsule. This can protect your mic against spit and wind interference and enable you to lengthen your recording mic's usability span by several years. Note that microphone windscreens are specifically designed for a particular mic design so find out if yours is compatible before buying one.
Microphone Stands
Chairs, tables and cabinets and even your 5-foot stack one-decade's worth of music recording technology magazines shouldn't be used as a microphone stand. It would be better to use one with a metal construction as it is more durable than other materials. Not only would it help you look professional; it would also allow you to give your hand a break when you're singing.
Boom Mic Stands
Microphone stands are nice but if you want a performance space that would be good for a variety of music (and musicians), a boom mic stand would be a good idea. They are a good solution if you want a set-up where the recording devices can pick up all the sounds that should be picked up, as in the case of kick drums and amplifiers - and a whole load of backup vocalists.
Power Supply
You will need phantom power if you intend to use condenser mics to be able to record astounding vocals because condenser microphones require phantom power. If you don't have a console that supplies this, there are compact phantom power supplies that can power the mic of your choice, which are also small enough to carry around. If, however, you do not want to risk running out of battery power right smack in the middle of an great recording session, you would need a power adapter for your phantom power supply.
Microphone Shock Mount
If you want a solution to get rid of vibrations, a good shock mount is a must. There are some microphone packages that offer shock mounts with the recording mics, though should you purchase one yourself, check first if your mic willbe the right size.
All in all you might want to think of these accessories before you get down to the actual recording.
