The Wall Street Journal is a daily newspaper which exists in both print and online formats. It has been printed continuously since it was established in 1874. Online content is usually accessed by paid subscription, and, with around a million paid subscribers in 2007, the Wall Street Journal has been consistently one of the most popular paid subscription websites on the Internet. It is also the largest newspaper in the United States.
The Wall Street Journal offers a look at the U.S. economy and international business news through a variety of lenses. That variety is enhanced by somewhat of a split between the opinion section and the news sections of the Wall Street Journal. The Journal editorial board is notable for representing generally conservative political and economic views. That is in great contrast to the Journal news reporting, which in a 2004 study was found to be the most liberal of twenty news outlets. The independence of reporters, as seen in their ideological differences from the editorial board, is a deliberate policy of the Wall Street Journal.
Like any other major newspaper, the Wall Street Journal covers a variety of straight news stories. The World News section covers international events likely to attract American readers. The U.S. News section covers major political and economic stories within the United States. As its namesake would suggest, the Wall Street Journal is based out of New York City, and the paper has a corresponding New York News section which covers local interest stories. Regular news in the Journal would consist of stories covering major foreign natural disasters, the policies of American political figures, or a grisly New York murder story.
In addition to regular news, the Wall Street Journal specializes in news related to business and finance. The Business News section covers major news in the U.S. business world. The Real Estate Section covers stories related to the state of American real estate. The Market News section covers stories about the global financial markets from the NASDAQ to foreign markets.
These sections tend to deal with macroeconomic trends and major corporate news. The Journal also has a few sections for more localized business news and trends. The Small Business Section of the Journal covers stories relevant to the experiences of people who own or operate small business. The Management section of the Journal covers stories having to do with managers. For example, a story about a criminal investigation of a company would be found in the Business Section, while a story about the criminal investigation of a CEO would be found in the Management Section.
Stories in the Wall Street Journal do not stop localizing there, however. The Personal Finance Section covers news and offers advice relevant to all financially responsible individuals. A story about what a new law or regulation will mean for individual readers would be found here. The Life and Culture Section similarly looks at trends and events which will likely impact the lives of many of its readers. Finally, the Careers Section covers news about the condition of the job market.
The last types of stories covered by the Wall Street Journal are special interest stories. The Technology Section covers business stories about the Technology sector of the economy. The Health Section covers stories about advances in medicine and the latest health research. The Sports Section covers news for sports fans.
The final section of the Wall Street Journal is the Opinion Section, which features columns from the editorial board, Journal writers, and readers. The Opinion Section of the Wall Street Journal, as already noted, tends to lean towards conservative views. The Journal is notable, however, for keeping the level of debate more articulated and nuanced than some other opinion forums.
All-in-all, the Wall Street Journal is a paper which any educated person would benefit from reading, and its influence in the business world makes it indispensible for business-minded readers.
