Although Waikiki is the main tourist destination on Oahu and is where the vast majority of resorts are located, there are a few other options for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. About thirty minutes from Waikiki, Oahu's "second city" of Kapolei is home to several resorts that are somewhat off the beaten path in terms of Hawaii travel. The area is on the west coast of Oahu, known for being the driest part of the island with the most sunshine. Ihilani Resort and Spa was the first resort in the area. It is a tropical resort set on several lagoons, renowned for its quiet luxury. The newest Ko Olina hotel is a Disney property: Aulani. Although you won't see too much in the way of Mickey and Minnie Mouse (although they are portrayed as fellow guests), this resort has all the detailed touches of a Disney resort done Hawaiian style. Aside from the lagoons out front, the Aulani has two water slides, a winding lazy river, and hot tubs, making the resort's water attractions popular with guests of all ages. For those who want to try snorkeling for the first time, a Rainbow Reef snorkeling lagoon is only eight feet deep and is well stocked with a thousand colorful fish. Roy's Restaurant, featuring Hawaiian fusion cuisine, is near both Kapolei resorts. Hawaii travel isn't complete without trying some local favorites: try the macadamia-nut crusted locally caught fish and sushi creations by the in-house sushi chef.
On the other side of the island, near the legendary North Shore surfing spots, the Turtle Bay Resort also seems a world away from Waikiki. It will take about an hour to get there from Honolulu International Airport, but most visitors agree it's worth the wait. The North Shore is largely undeveloped and the local people and surfing community have been fighting to keep it that way, making this a perfect choice for anyone looking for the more undeveloped side of Hawaii travel. As an added bonus, you're close to some of the best attractions on the island. Regardless of weather and surf conditions, you'll be able to find at least a few surfers at the many famous beaches along the North Shore. If you're in the area during the weekend, expect long traffic delays along the small beachfront roads as surfers and onlookers look for parking. Look for the shrimp trucks near Kahuku and try some famous locally grown garlic butter shrimp. The Polynesian Cultural Center, showcasing the cultures of various Pacific Islanders and culminating in a very popular nighttime hula show, is just minutes from Turtle Bay.
The outer islands, including Hawaii island, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai, also have many options. Each island has a unique personality, and once you visit one you'll want to try them all. Some popular outer island activities include active volcanoes, rain forest hikes, macadamia nut farm excursions, and, of course, some of the world's top beaches.
