Man, are iPads sexy! Those things are sexy, sexy, sexy! But is it really practical having one to run your small business?
Let's qualify the scenario, and author briefly. I've been an IT computer support guy over a decade now. I've been a small business owner for more than five. I manage a few businesses now, and have opened and closed more than a few along the way. Nearly all of my minuscule (yet important!) work is conducted via email, word processing, spread sheets, databases, internet web platforms, and cloud sharing programs like Dropbox and Evernote.
Further qualifying the scenario, I don't take home $10,000 profit monthly. My cash flow is treasured, and pertinent to me. Cash retained is key! The money provides more dollars for running that ad campaign, working with a freelance designer to make-over something on the webpage, funding my LLC accountant, or simply buying me a latte making sure that I can generate more creative magic. I DO NOT have "disposable" income to buy the newest gadget sexiness just for the sake of buying it. If you do, there is no need to continue this write-up...just e-mail me some feedback on how this webpage looks on your iPad ;)
Into the nitty-gritty: Firstly, when I reference a Netbook, I'm talking about ANY small laptop that is easily transportable, and that is comparatively low cost. I work with an Acer Aspire, with Windows 7 (full version), and 3GB RAM, 320GB hard drive. I paid a little over $200 more for mine because I'm a spoiled IT and care about the additional RAM and a complete version of Windows. I do recommend it for most small business owners, however you can buy a fantastic system for around $300. And there is my first distinctive comparison.
The iPad runs for $500. $400 if you buy a used one on Craigslist. The screen clarity is Amazing, the apps are astonishingly useful, and reading books on that sucker is like splashing around in contextual paradise! ...but that is about it. You could sum up all of those pluses as saying the iPad is sexy. Truly sexy. But is this enough?
The Netbook offers a complete keyboard. It provides a common Windows platform which still has the lion's share of the market, meaning more things are designed for, and work with it. It has more storage space, there are multiple ways to connect to the Internet, and it crams more computing power in much less money!
Ultimately, this is what I must base my professional recommendation on for small business owners debating between IT solutions. If you're a real estate agent, or maybe a photographer, that iPad touch screen with fantastic gestures, and outstanding screen clarity begins to make sense, even outweighs the Netbook. But when you're a normal small business owner, and you require consistent word processing access, unhindered Internet experience, and storage upon storage to keep your whole "office" mobile (don't forget to backup!) then this Netbook is the not-as-sexy but more sensible choice!
