Some homeowners don't need too much "stuff" in their homes. When it comes to home furnishings, a bed, a couple of chairs, a table to eat on and maybe a sofa are enough. The Living Room
In America, at least, the living room used to be called the parlor. The parlor was also a place where deceased family members were often laid out. As more people were sent to mortuaries when they died, the name "parlor," with its somewhat negative connotations, began to be replaced with the word "livingroom."

The sofa, which some people call a couch, is usually the focal point in a living room. The best sofas have frames made of hardwood like oak or maple, and hand tied springs that give support. The best upholstered chairs, like sofas, also have kiln dried hardwood frames and can come in many types. Coffee tables, lamp tables, bookshelves and armoires may complete the basic decor of the livingroom.

The Kitchen
Many people believe that the kitchen is the heart of the house. It may be a tiny space that's good for cooking and not much else, or the biggest room in the house where people can sit around tables or kitchen islands and socialize. Kitchens often have built in home furnishings like peninsulas, islands, cabinets, nooks and countertops. There are, of course, major and minor appliances like refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and microwave ovens. Other home furnishings for the kitchen include stools that can be tucked in around the kitchen island, the kitchen table, and the chairs around it.

The Bathroom
A bathroom, like a kitchen, can be tiny or large and should provide privacy and peace and quiet. Furnishings are medicine cabinets, a vanity, built in shelves or drawers and even free standing furniture like linen chests. The homeowner can have shower-bathtub combinations, or free standing bathtubs and showers. There's a variety of sinks to choose from as well.

The Bedroom
The bed, of course, dominates the bedroom, though some people can do with a futon. Beds for grownups come, roughly, in twin, full, Queen and King sized and usually have a mattress and a box spring. They can come with canopies or four posters. They can have iron frames or the mattress can be laid on a platform without a box spring. Other home furnishings for the bedroom, depending on how large it is, are nightstands, chests of drawers or chiffoniers, and if there's space, writing or dressing tables and maybe upholstered benches.

Other Rooms
Home furnishings in laundry rooms can be deep sinks, bins, rolling carts, drying racks and ironing boards as well as the washer and dryer. Utility spaces can have bins, rolling carts, and shelving, while the home office or library will need desks for working on, shelving and file cabinets.

Whether they're inexpensive or luxurious, home furnishings can help make the homeowner comfortable and happy in their surroundings. Home furnishings also welcome guests and make their stay in the home pleasurable as well.
