What is a Triathlon Training Hack Bike?
The most expensive piece of kit needed for triathlons has got to be the triathlon bike. Many triathletes pride themselves on having the lightest or most aerodynamic bike on the road, in a race or in the shed if they are less active, but what do you do with your extremely valuable pride and joy in the off months? First of all let's quickly define the main difference between TT bikes, Road Bikes and Hack bikes.
Triathlon Bikes vs. Road Bikes
Triathlon bikes or TT (Time Trial) bikes differ from a standard road bike in a number of ways, the most obvious being that TT bikes will have aero bars that force the rider into a different racing position compared to the drop bars on a road bike. The frames and seat posts on triathlon bikes are also shaped and angled differently compared to road racing bikes.
The Hack Bike
Many triathletes will wisely store their more expensive equipment away for the winter and use a second hand triathlon bike or a used racing bike for training. These are referred to as 'hack' bikes and are used for the down and dirty training sessions. They tend to be older bikes that have done their fair share of miles and the owners do not mind subjecting them to cold weather and the salt on icy roads. Hack bikes are not used for racing but act as perfect replacement in the off season when you do not want to subject your race bike to unnecessary risk of damage but still want to get out and train for the cycle leg of next season's triathlons.
Do I need a hack bike?
Whether you need a hack bike or not will really depend on your level of fitness or level of involvement in triathlons as well as your financial situation. Many people cannot afford two bikes let alone one high spec bike for performance enhancement.
If this is the case you should try and treat the one bike you do have with as much care as you can. If needs be you can modify your current bike with clip on aero bars and other accessories that may result in a personalised piece of kit that you become strangely fond of and one day, when you can finally afford to upgrade, you will have a hack bike ready and waiting that you are as comfortable on as you are on the couch at home.
If you can afford a second bike to use as a hack bike then you should look for something second hand that you will be able to ride comfortably for the duration of the off season. If you have a TT bike that you race on then you should ideally find an older TT bike to use as a hack bike. The last thing you want is to get used to riding on a road racing bike only to have to readjust again when you get back on your original bike.
Finally a hack bike is great for use as a commuting bike as you can be happy to chain it up and not worry about the possibility of it being stolen and you being left out of pocket.
