Are you interested in attending a prestigious university? Is the notoriety of your college important to you? If so, you may want to consider attending an Ivy League university.
The dream for many students is to attend one of these famed schools. Since the term conjures up an image of prestige, social elitism, and academic excellence, graduating from one of these universities is indeed an honor. However, despite the Ivy League's notoriety, many do not know the history of the these colleges.
What universities make up this extraordinary League?
First of all, it is important to know what Universities make up this prestigious League of schools. There are currently eight schools, including Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.
Each of these universities is consistently ranked among the top universities in the nation by agencies such as the U.S. News and World Report college rankings and the Princeton Review college rankings.
Why these schools are called the "ivy league"?
There are quite a few stories about how these universities became known as the Ivy League. The most common, and generally thought to be the correct version involves athletics. The term Ivy League referred to those schools that were in a constant battle for football supremacy.
It is originally stated that sports writer, Stanley Woodward, coined the phrase in the 1930's. It is thought that because the schools had ivy covered walls, was were they got their name. The term became official in 1954 and has been used ever since.
Ivy League Admissions
While, the term originated with athletics, these universities are also steeped in a tradition of academic excellence. There are strict admissions criteria at all universities in this League. The schools will require that you have a high GPA and have many extracurricular and leadership roles during high school. You must also score in the top percentile on the SAT. Still, having a perfect academic record and leadership potential will not ensure your entry into one of the famed schools. There are literally hundreds of applications for every seat in the entering freshman class at the Ivy League universities.
However, if you can gain admittance, the prestige attained by graduating from one of these elite Ivy League schools is well worth the extra effort needed for admission. Many employers look at the graduates from these schools as very desirable candidates. They sometimes will put these graduates at the top of the list even before looking at graduates of other very good schools.
