Assistant vet salary has garnered much attention and interest over the past few years, especially now that people have seen just how high a veterinarian's salary can be. However, not all people would want to be tied into a degree, especially if they aren't sure of what they would like to really be.
An assistant vet has relatively fewer units to take compared to veterinarians. A veterinarian would have to take a pre-veterinary college course, and then take veterinary courses after they could apply for a licensure examination in veterinary practice. On the other hand, an assistant veterinarian would only have to be certified as an assistant. Interest in animals is valuable and is much required. Animals brought in veterinary clinics aren't limited to fluffy dogs, cats and bunnies. There are times where clinics would encounter unusual animals such as snakes, lizards, toads and many others.
Responsibilities of a veterinarian and an assistant veterinarian vary widely too. Veterinarians are responsible for treating pets and animals and making sure that they are free of illnesses. They could teach people on how to better take care of their pets and they could do researches on animal and pet care. Vets could teach in schools and universities too. They operate on animals that they are widely knowledgeable of. In certain cases, a veterinarian working with animals that produce food for people (i.e. goats, cows or chickens) should be able to distinguish a sick animal from a healthy animal, so that proper care could be given to both of them. They are responsible for stopping the spread of diseases among these animals, as well as determining which animals are healthy and which are not.
A veterinary assistant have fewer responsibilities but they are still important. In clinics, they are responsible for making both the pets and their owners comfortable while waiting for their turn with the veterinarian. They could also function as the veterinarian's secretary, which would require them to take calls, make appointments, cancel appointments, sell prescription medications for pets and complete the pets' charts.
A vet salary averages on $45,000 at least and a little more than $100,000 at most. How much could a vet's assistant make? On average, a vet assistant could make $7 to $14 every hour. Annually, this would amount to a total of $15,000 to $32,800. It is much too low compared with a veterinarian's salary, but then veterinarians have at least 4 years of education, skill, knowledge and specialty to be where they are and that is what people pay for.
An assistant vet salary could be considered shabby, but for a job that doesn't need much time for education, it actually pays well enough. Job satisfaction rates are high in veterinary assistants though, and it says a lot when compared with jobs satisfaction rates of veterinarians themselves. At the end of the day, salary isn't really the biggest thing there is to a career. Taking care of pets could be a hobby and it could be a job that pays you for enjoying your day with pets.
