If you are tired of the look in your kitchen, you may be considering a remodeling job. Remodeling can take several weeks and can cost thousands of dollars. Not to mention the fact that your kitchen will likely be out of commission during that time and you will have to eat out or do your dishes in the bathtub. If you want an updated look in your kitchen without a lot of excess trouble and high costs, you might consider kitchen cabinet refacing.
Kitchen cabinet refacing can mean one of two things: 1. Replacing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts or 2. Removing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts and resurfacing them before replacing the units. No matter which route you choose to go, you will need to measure your cabinets thoroughly and precisely. Measuring is one of the crucial steps in this type of project. If you decide to replace these items, and you do not measure correctly, you will have large problems when the installation step comes along. If you are resurfacing, you may end up with too much or too little of the materials you have chosen to use for the resurfacing aspects.
In order to ensure accuracy in your measurements, use a tape measure that can get as close as 1/16th of an inch. Draw out the layout of your cabinets and label them with a letter or a number. When you take the measurements, write the measurement next to each one of the letters or numbers. Then, when you go out to shop for your materials, it is a good idea to take your measurements along so you can reference each specific measurement as needed.
If you plan to add moldings, take the linear footage you measure and add 10 percent before you place the order. That may seem like too much excess, but you will lose a portion of every piece when you make a cut. Plus, you will likely make a mistake or two along the way and having the extra will save you time from having to reorder.
If you want to complete the new look on your cabinets once the refacing has been done, choose new hardware for the doors and drawers. The hardware is easy to install and makes little to no mess. When it is new and blends in with the rest of the kitchen, it can greatly change the overall appearance of the kitchen.
Kitchen remodeling is expensive and a long drawn out process. Kitchen cabinet refacing, however, can take very little time and change the look of the kitchen in just a few days. If you want to add value to your home and enhance the appearance of the kitchen as a whole, consider kitchen cabinet refacing.
