If you have worked on many home improvement projects in your house over the years, you may feel as if you are qualified to install kitchen cabinet layouts as well. When the time comes to replace those old, tired cabinets with brand new ones, gather your tools and get to work.
Before you begin the installation project, you will want to examine all of the cabinets and make sure the order is correct and complete. Check the cabinet sizes, colors, and designs to make sure everything is just as you want it. This is easier to do upfront than after they have been installed on your walls.
Then, determine where each cabinet goes and mark their positions on the wall with a pen or pencil using a measuring take and level. Double check the dimensions as you go and remember you can never measure too many times.
It is easiest to install the upper wall cabinets first so the lower cabinets are not in the way. Measure from the floor and locate the right position on the wall. Think about the base counter space, the countertop, and even the backsplash. Do a little math and add those measurements together to come up with the place the bottom of the cabinets should sit. Then, place a mark at the top of the cabinets. Some people like to put a temporary support board up along the level line to help the installation process go more smoothly.
Locate the studs with a stud finder and mark their positions. You will want to mark the wall both above and below where the cabinets will go so you always know where the studs are located. Create a sub-assembly next by attaching the single cabinets together. Place their backsides against a flat surface and make sure they are lying flush against one another. There can be a height difference that creates ridges between the various cabinets.
Secure the cabinets and make sure they are flush against each other and the wall. Clamp the surfaces together and use screws to make the attachment permanent. Make sure the screws penetrate the studs and the back of the cabinets. The next step will be to install the base cabinets.
Make sure you follow any install kitchen cabinet instructions that have come along with the cabinets. Different brands and products may recommend different forms of installation. When in doubt, return to your local home improvement store and ask any questions you might have. You can always hire a professional if you struggle with the job. It is a good idea to make sure the install kitchen cabinet process is done correctly. The cabinets will likely be a part of the kitchen for many years to come.
