If you are installing your new home front door for the first time, it is normal to feel a bit confused about how to do it. The good news is that this project can be finished in no time, and most manufacturers try to make the process easier by selling new home front doors pre-hung in their frames. But before you get to the fun part, you will need to remove your old door. If your manufacturer s instructions don t advise you how to do it, follow these steps.
1. Measurements
The first thing you have to do before installing your new home front door is take the measurements of the old door so that you know what dimensions your new home front door should have. This will include the height and width of your old door, and if you are installing a new home front door that is not pre-hung, you will need to measure the width of the jamb, as well. This second step will make your installation easier by preventing the need for any jamb extensions or inserts. You can use this information when ordering your new home front door to make sure it will fit in the same opening and save the time and energy required to make a bigger opening for your new home front door.
2. Taking Off the Trim
Next, begin the removal of your old door by removing the screws that hold the hings in place. Afterward, tap the pins of the hinges loose with a hammer. During this step, it is critical to have another person to help you to make sure that you don t loose grip of the door as you are removing it, which is an easy way to injure yourself. Once the hinge pins are loose, swing the door open and remove it. You should plan where you will place your old door after removal so that you can get it out the way quickly and safely.
To remove your frame, there are several types of tools you can use. Something as small and simple as a drywall knife and a hammer will work fine. The trick is to remove the trim gently, prying it loose with your knife and tapping the other end of the knife with a hammer. Remember to use care so that you don t damage the trim and can put it back on if needed. It should come off as one piece if you are careful not to break it.
3. Remove the Door Jamb
Lastly, you will need to take off the door jamb. You can use a hacksaw or a jigsaw for this step. Begin at the bottom of the door frame, inserting the jigsaw between the door jamb and the wall. Cut through the nails that are holding the jamb in place until you reach the top. Once you have worked your way from one end to the other, you should be able to take the jamb off with ease. Repeat this process for the jamb along the top of the door frame and the jamb along the other side.
Now that you have removed all of the necessary pieces, it s time to get to the real work! If you follow these three easy steps, you ll be able to install your new home front door sooner than you might think.
