You have a room that needs a new floor and you have decided on going with a hardwood floor. But not all hardwood floors are created equal. A solid hardwood floor is not recommended for certain types of subflooring like concrete while some engineered hardwood floors (laminates, veneers and the like) are not always a good idea for some rooms. So how do you decide which type of hardwood floor works in the room that you will be doing the floor install? Your first stop is a floor contractor.
A floor contractor is an expert in explaining why certain rooms require a specific type of hardwood floor. For example, a basement or bathroom is not conducive for solid hardwood floors because if the floor gets wet or is subjected to high levels of humidity, it can get ruined. At the same time, a small guest bathroom may be able to accommodate an engineered hardwood floor as long as water that spills is cleaned up immediately. If you are thinking about putting in a floor heating system, an engineered hardwood floor is recommended over a solid wood floor.
Another important factor that the floor contractor can help you with is in color selection. Light, bleach and dark colored hardwood floors should be avoided in high traffic areas and in rooms where food is a constant like kitchens and family rooms. These colors will show every little spot and will make your floors look worn much quicker than they should. For entryways or foyers, a floor contractor may recommend a formal look to make a more dramatic statement when people enter your home. This has become very popular over recent years. However, this should be decided well before the floor install begins as you may need customized pieces that may have to be ordered well in advance. And don't forget that the floor price will go up the more customization you want. If you are on a budget and have a set floor price that you do not want to exceed, consider using an area rug over the floor to make an impression rather than customizing the hardwood floor itself. This will also cut down on some of the wear and tear that occurs on floors in this part of the house.
Your floor contractor can also let you know how certain colors may change the appearance of your room. Darker colored floors are not advisable in small spaces. Using a brighter color floor will open up the space. Formal rooms like living rooms and dining rooms usually get darker, richer colors with inlays and accents on the corners. These rooms also work well with oriental rugs over them to complete the more formal appearance you want to achieve.
Putting the right type of hardwood floor in a room will not only provide you with a beautiful home, but will also be a tremendous asset if you one day decide to sell your house. Just make sure to maintain the floors by getting them refinished every few years and quickly cleaning up any messes or spills. The floor contractor will let you know the best way to care for your hardwood floors so they always look like brand new.
