The distinctiveness of Vincent van Gogh paintings are so pronounced and many reproductions have been made just to capture their beauty. Identifying van Gogh's paintings from works of other painters is a good skill learned by people who are deeply interested in his life and times, as well as those who are interested in buying his artworks.
A little something about Vincent van Gogh...
Vincent van Gogh was born in March 30, 1853. He never as much bloomed as an artist in his whole existence. He was a budding artist in the later years of his life and before his death, but never did he consider himself as an artist popular than many others. For him, he was just a frustrated artist at the height of his talent, skills and career.
His mental instability has given him this frustration. There were times when he felt like he could never draw again as if he had lost the ability to do it. Other times he just felt that he didn't even want to draw. But then at times he felt that he had to win this inner battle or lose everything he had achieved. In the end, with a gun in his hand, van Gogh tried to kill himself with a gunshot to his chest. After two days, he died.
When he was alive, his paintings never gained enough attention. Sure he had a lot of commissions but then he only sold a single painting while he was living. It could be said that he only gained his fame after he ended his life, making people listen to his story and take the time to look at his works. His story, as many quite agree, is actually a sad one, brushed with his anxiety, frustrations, self-conflicts, dark childhood and insanity. Over time after his death, some van Gogh paintings even got their recognition in the list of the highest priced paintings ever sold.
How to identify his paintings
First of all, Vincent van Gogh was a painter of a little number of subjects. He loved portraits. When he served as a missionary in 1879, he drew sketches of people he saw around the community. Looking closely at some abstracts, some of them could be people's portraits.
With the exception of quite a few paintings, van Gogh is known for his vivid colors. He painted mostly with oil and in canvas, and he liked using bright colors even in dark backdrops. He used coarse brushes and thick strokes.
Van Gogh was an impressionist. He painted his subjects quite differently from how it really looks like. All of his paintings, even of nature, could wander slightly away from how they are seen.
If you really want to identify van Gogh paintings, you should really acquaint yourself with his most famous paintings. The Starry Night, The Potato Eaters, the Sunflower series, the Olive Tree series and Bedroom in Arles are some of his most famous works. It is with these works that you'd be able to see his styles.
