Van Gogh paintings are some of the best known works of art even among people who only have a passing familiarity with the art world. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist who is today considered one of the most influential Post-Impressionist artists. During the last ten years of his life, Van Gogh produced over 800 paintings and an equal number of sketches, but allegedly sold just one painting, Red Vineyard at Arles, during his lifetime. He died in poverty but, ironically enough, today his paintings sell for millions of dollars at auction. In a list of paintings sold for the highest prices, as of June 2011, eleven of Van Gogh s paintings made the list and were sold for a total price of $670 million.
One of the most famous Van Gogh paintings is undoubtedly The Starry Night, which he painted in June 1889, thirteen months before he died at the age of 37. The painting depicts the view from the asylum room at Saint Remey where Van Gogh had committed himself after the infamous episode in which he cut off his ear. In The Starry Night, the night sky over the village of Saint-Rmy is transfigured by big round stars and swirls of burning yellow. Ironically enough, Van Gogh expressed dissatisfaction with the painting in a letter to his brother Theo. Today, however, The Starry Night is one of the most duplicated of his paintings and the original is currently part of the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art.
Another of the most famous Van Gogh paintings is Sunflowers, (Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers), which is best known for fetching a then-record price of $39.7 million, when it was sold at a Christie s Auction to the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company in 1987. The painting is one of two series of still life paintings of sunflowers that Van Gogh executed in 1887 and 1888. Unlike The Starry Night, Van Gogh was satisfied with the Sunflower still-life paintings and he eventually became so identified with them that no Van Gogh retrospective exhibition were held without including them.
Portrait of Dr. Gachet is one of the most admired of Van Gogh paintings and portrays French physician Paul Gachet, who treated him during the last months of his life, sitting at a table and leaning his head on his hand. There are two authenticated versions of this painting, both of which were painted in June 1890, and which are easily distinguished due to different color schemes and styles. The original version of the painting, which features a predominantly yellow color scheme and two yellow books on the table, fetched a then-record price of $82.5 million when it was sold in 1990 to Japanese businessman Ryoei Saito. The second version was owned by Dr. Gachet himself, and upon his death, was bestowed by his heirs to the Republic of France. At present, the Portrait of Dr. Gachet (second version) is part of the collection of the Muse d Orsay in Paris, along with 23 other Van Gogh paintings including Starry Night Over the Rhone and The Church at Auvers.
