Finding Van Gogh paintings for sale is virtually impossible despite the fact that he painted more than 800 paintings during the ten years he was active as well as a comparable number of drawings and 150 watercolors. Whenever a Van Gogh painting is sold at auction, it inevitably joins the list of most expensive paintings. Among the Van Gogh works that have joined this exclusive list include:
Portrait of Dr. Gachet (1890) one of Van Gogh s most admired paintings, the artist painted it during the last year of his life as a tribute to French doctor Paul Gachet, who treated Van Gogh from May to July 1890. At the time it was sold, in 1990, it was the most expensive Van Gogh paintings for sale, fetching a then-record $82.5 million. The version that obtained this price is the original version, which features a predominantly yellow color scheme and is currently part of a private collection; a second version, which features a blue color scheme, is in the collection of the Muse d Orsay in Paris.
Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers (1888) more generally known simply as Sunflowers this painting is another of the Van Gogh paintings for sale that made headlines when it was put up for auction in 1987 and sold for the then-record price of $39.7 million to the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company.
Portrait of Joseph Roulin (1889) - one of a series of paintings that Van Gogh made of the Roulin family when he stayed in Arles. Joseph Roulin was a good friend of Van Gogh and his family agreed to sit for the artist several times. This was a godsend for Van Gogh, who loved painting portraits, since he had very few opportunities to find models to sit for him due to his financial limitations. This painting is currently part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which paid $58 million for it in addition to selling off seven paintings from its permanent collection, including Mondrian s Blue Faade (1913-14) and Picasso s Studio in a Painted Frame.
Irises (1889) one of Van Gogh s lighter paintings, he painted this while he was an inmate at the asylum at Saint Rmy during the last year of his life and depicts the asylum s garden. He referred to Irises as a lighting rod since he believed that painting helped keep him from going insane; a few months after completing this painting, however, he would commit suicide. When it was sold at auction in 1987, it fetched $53.9 million, then the highest price ever paid for a painting.
A Wheatfield with Cypresses (September 1889) also painted during his stay at Saint Rmy, Wheatfield is actually one of three similar paintings of this landscape. Among Van Gogh paintings for sale, it sold for the relatively high price of $57 million when it was auctioned off in 1993 to publisher and philanthropist Walter H. Annenberg; a second version painted in September 1889 is part of the collection of the National Gallery in London while a July 1889 version is in New York s Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.
