If you want to order facsimiles of Van Gogh oil paintings, why not request lesser-known, but still beautiful, works by the artist? Although Van Gogh completed over 800 paintings during his lifetime, only a handful are well known, including The Starry Night, which inspired Don MacLean s tribute song Vincent and The Potato Eaters, one of his earliest works, which he intended as an homage to the hard-working peasants that he admired. Here are some of the lesser known Van Gogh but still outstanding works for which you can request reproductions.
Wheatfield with Crows (July 1890) this painting is generally believed to be Van Gogh s final painting, although historians dispute this claim as no clear records exist to validate it. The painting depicts a cloudy, turbulent sky filled with crows over a wind-swept wheat field, which many have interpreted as being an omen of his upcoming death.
The Red Vineyard (at Arles; November 1888) this landscape is known for being allegedly the only painting Van Gogh sold during his lifetime. It depicts a group of peasants working in a vineyard, with a predominantly red and yellow color scheme.
The Yellow House (at Arles; 1888) one of the series of Van Gogh oil paintings revolving around the artist s stay at Arles in the south of France, during which he developed his distinguishing style. Many of the works he painted during this period feature brighter colors than later paintings as he fell in love with the Arles landscape and its vibrant natural lights. Other notable works from this period include The Bedroom in Arles, of which he did three versions on October 1888 and September 1889 and The Night Caf, a depiction of the Caf de la Gare, which was run by Joseph-Michel and Marie Ginoux. Van Gogh would also go on to paint six portraits of Madame Ginoux in a series collectively called L Arlsienne.
The Caf Terrace at Night (on the Place du Forum; September 1888) this work depicts a popular caf in Arles in the south of France at night and marks the first time Van Gogh depicted a starry night sky in his paintings. Although Van Gogh failed to sign this painting, its provenance is verified by several mentions of it in the artist s letters as well as a pen drawing of the composition which he executed as a study from which he completed the work.
The Church at Auvers (1890) painted during the last year of Van Gogh s life, the painting seems to hark back to the northern landscapes from the painter s childhood. Although the foreground of the church is brightly lit, the sky behind it is overcast and done in dark blue with swirls of black.
Daubigny s Garden (1890) the title actually refers to three paintings that depict the garden of the painter Charles-Francois Daubigny. One of the paintings is a small study of a section of the garden while two are double-square paintings that were done on extra-large canvases the approximate size of two standard canvases. The two double-square Van Gogh oil paintings are similar in composition but have different color schemes, with one painted in brighter colors.
