Multiple layers of worn out shingles also disassociate the roofing nails from the sheathing, which decreases durability. And what is more, the extra weight added by the old shingles can eventually exceed the capacity of the structure to support dead weight, which could lead to collapse.

An ideal and durable roofing material is slate. It is considered the best kind of material for roofing, being able to last for more than a century. However, it is also very expensive, with the possibility of costing as much as the entire house in the U.S. In this type of roofing, the fixing nails are the first to deteriorate. Thus, these nails have often been made of stainless steel or copper, albeit they should still be given protection from the weather.
