A green roof has also been found to double and even triple the roof's life span. An additional function is to serve as purification centers of greywater through the installation of treatment ponds. These ponds can be simple substrates or ponds with plants.

A green roof also provides living spaces for plants, insects, and other wildlife species such as birds, small reptiles and amphibians. Butterflies and bees have been attracted to green roofs nineteen stories high. These roofs also serve as habitat corridors which wildlife can use in migration or in traversing habitats separated by urban landscapes. Green roofs provide additional habitats for flora and fauna in a time where habitats are getting fewer and fewer.
