Fat serves as an energy reserve and also helps insulate the body and protect any internal organs where the skeletal system isn't there to provide protection. Lastly, proteins are the building blocks needed to repair and build new muscle tissue. The process of converting all of these nutrients into a form that is usable by the body is called metabolism, such as where proteins metabolize into amino acids and fat metabolizes into fatty acids.
There are quite a few diets that favor excessive focus on one class of nutrients while completely ignoring another. Although this can work for awhile, the body eventually gives up a few things in return for this imbalance in nutrition in your diet, and unfortunately, it isn't just the fat. Avoiding fat is understandable, as too much of it can be detrimental to health, making the heart and muscles work more than they should. However, a small amount of fat is still necessary for insulation and added protection of the internal organs. Too little carbohydrates can mean a lack of energy that is immediately accessible. On the other hand, too much carbohydrates can provide a much-needed energy boost, but is only short-lived unless there is more protein to counteract this.
