Shower cabins are favored by most homeowners. Most of the times, you will find individuals turning the space taken up by a bath tub into a shower enclosure. It is a great means to make the bathroom spacious yet ideal for comfortable bathing. Here are the steps on building a shower cabin. It could help you whether you are planning to do it yourself or hire a pro (at least you know what's going to happen).
Tools and Materials
If you got the tools and experience then you can save a lot of money by building your shower cabin. You will only need a few materials like PVC or CPE shower pan liner, 2x4 planks, screws, backer board, cement, concrete, silicone adhesive and sponge. Most importantly, you need to have the matching shower tray and enclosure.
Structure
You will need to determine the kind of shower cabin that you want before working. You can use one to three existing walls of in your bathroom for a quadrant cabin. You should also decide if you want tiled flooring or a shower tray.
Walls
Make sure that plumbing is ready before working on the walls. The pipe holes should all be in place. Your walls should be tiled up to the height of the shower head. Most people will not tile the walls up to the ceiling. Measure and mark the first row of tiles. You should start laying the tiles at the bottom. Start at the center working towards the corners. This is the best way to ensure that the tiles will be even.
Drain
Get the drain assembly bolts. You will need to create small openings in the drain membrane to allow the bolts. Get a duct tape for covering the drain's opening to keep it safe from debris. The top should be screwed down. Secure the entire drain membrane around the walls.
Grab gravel and put it around the drain assembly. Place the concrete making sure that the holes are kept open. Make sure that the gravel is leveled and smooth. Leave it for at least 24 hours to dry. You should also ensure that the drain will be lower than the shower tray.
Shower Trays
There are several options for sizes and shapes of shower trays but most of them are quadrangle. Of course, it has to be the same size of your enclosure.
Install the tray first. Use the best sealant that you can find to ensure that there will be no leaks as they may destroy the floor underneath the tray. For the material, cast resin shower trays are the best when it comes to durability.
Shower Enclosure
The shower enclosure should match the shape and size of the shower tray. This is why you will most likely find shower cabin kits that already include a tray and enclosure. Most of them are made from glass. Some are framed, others are not. You may also find semi-framed glass shower enclosures.
The shower enclosures do not need to reach the ceiling. In fact, you can have at least a foot for clearance. You will also need a high quality silicone sealant.
