The commencement of winter maybe wearying enough for those living in the USA and Britain , with the chilly weather and short daylight taking its toll on body and soul; which is before an much more load of physical, mental and financial stress affecting thousands caused by Christmas. Christmas is supposed to be a time for family gatherings, cheerful celebration of the birth of Jesus, kindhearted giving ; a time for showing love for fellow man and woman.
Sorry to say the commercial Christmas of 2011 is very likely going to be the most nerve-wracking of all time for many millions of Americans. The Christmas season is that other source of stress that propels lots of people into the New Year in a condition of of financial distress, falling apart, fearing the following Christmas twelve months ahead; in worst cases separation, divorce and another shredded family are sparked over the season.
Why did we permit ourselves to be forced into the commercial pit which manipulates human conspicuous consumption, indulgence, insincerity and herd mentality? I was as guilty as any of that in the past. What could be worst of all, we fall into the trap of misinforming our little ones about a phantom materialistic enterprise named Santa Claus or Father Christmas, as if he were real. Telling the story of Santa Claus is one thing, on the other hand letting our infants believe it is genuine is quite another. Is that really an example we ought to be proud of? We gladly tell infants fairy stories without making out they are the truth, so why not Santa Claus?
The reason, of course, is that Santa Claus has become the Chief of Christmas Marketing for Christmas Incorporated. The Christ has been removed of Christmas and displaced by a cash drawer; and Jingle Bells becomes the ringing of the till, or more likely nowadays the swishing of the plastic money. We have been tricked into being sales agents for Santa, but instead of receiving wage for our advertisements the money is sucked out of our checking account or into our unpaid debts.
As much as little ones love to enjoy themselves and receive presents, I am confident they would appreciate them just as much without the sham and fibs. How may we expect our little ones to trust us as parents when we live the Santa Claus lie for so long as we guess they will believe it. It always ends up with the child realizing it is all fantasy but not sure whether to admit they know, lest they get no more gifts; and parents try to guess when is the best time to tell the child that, after all, Santa Claus does not exist?
We often tend not to give full credit to our toddlers for their ability to accept truthfulness as it is. If we read them a Santa Claus story and tell them that it is just a story, then they can accept that as fact. Even if we try to put in plain words that we have no money to buy things for Christmas, they will be able to understanding that too. It is all too often parents who have given in to peer pressure and propaganda from corporate America; it is up to parents who can reject commercial Christmas in partnership with their youngsters.
One thing which I've appreciated from living in a "poor" country for a long timeis just how much those of the material Western world can learn from the poorest about true generosity. It was for that reason I was inspired to write a Santa story entitled "Why Won't Santa Visit Visit Poor Children?".
May your Christmas be filled with love, peace and honesty.
