Once upon a time, just one method was relied on to treat people who have problems with drug dependency and alcoholism, and that is the twelve step strategy. It was a program developed by the group Alcoholics Anonymous, initially to help people get over alcoholism. Overtime, it has been adapted by several institutions to address drug dependency as well. Although it has been known to be successful, some individuals did not feel comfortable having it as it is a faith based program. The twelve step strategy contains surrendering yourself to a higher power and trusting and achieving faith in the Lord to be able to be on the way to recovery. Many of the steps in the twelve step approach include praying to God and restoring ones faith, which made many people unpleasant. The twelve step program is most effective for people with religious views. The non 12 step method came along for people who don't have a religion. Belief in God is not pushed by the Non 12 step rehabs. It is best suited for those who have no religion.

Group therapy is the major highlight of the approach where people who have addiction troubles are motivated to express their knowledge together and hopefully study from each other. Non 12 step drug rehabs hold group therapy sessions but the program does not rely on it that much, unlike that of locations that have the 12 step program. Instead, it believes that one on one sessions between a counselor and the addict or alcoholic is a more effective way to help an individual recover by identifying the underlying cause of the drug addiction and alcoholism. It addresses the mental and emotional addiction of the individual to alcohol or perhaps drugs separately from that of his physical dependency.

The 12 step program only runs for 4 weeks, different from the non twelve step program that can work for as long as three months or longer. Although 4 weeks is usually enough time to recover for some people, it can cause several relapses afterwards. Relapses are not often experienced by people who have gone through the non 12 step program. There are different rehabilitation facilities all over the country and each one provides a different kind of method to assist the person cope with drug addiction or alcoholism, however, at the end of the day, a person's recovery depends on his readiness to create permanent variations to his lifestyle and also the decisions which he makes.
