When your window screens become damaged beyond repair, it is time for replacement screens. This can range from numerous small rips and tears to a full blown hole. Sure, you can call a technician for an easy fix if you prefer. However, fixing a metal framed screen could be just as easy for you to do it at home by following these simple steps.
The first step you need to take is to lay your frame down on a level surface. Remove the vinyl piece called a spline, which is holding the screen in place. This is a simple step that is easily performed by prying it up with a flat screwdriver. Now, remove the old screen and place a new piece of screen over the top of the frame. Next, cut around the new screen; be certain to leave excess screen around the edges so that you have room to work with. A reliable way to determine how large to cut the screen, is to make it the same size as the metal frame. This will leave you with as much excess as you may need.
The next step in your screen replacement is taking a putty knife and creasing the screen on one side. Insert the knife onto the screen and push down into the opening on this side. This is where the vinyl spline will be replaced. Be sure that you only start by creasing one side of the frame. Now, take a screening tool, or hammer and use it to put a new spline into the screen. After you complete this step, ask someone to help you stretch the screen across so you can repeat this step on the opposite side. Complete the two remaining sides the same way. It is important to use the help of an assistant in order to get the screen stretched out properly. This will make the new screen tight and a perfect fit. To finish your project, you should now trim away the excess screen that is left after inserting the spline. Finally, replace your screen back into your window for a completed project. This would be the time where you could possibly paint the frame if needed or make any additional changes.
Keeping the screens in your home in good condition is vital in order to keep out pests such as flies. Certain pests can come right in through even the smallest hole in your screen. Once they enter your home, they become a major problem, which is hard to get rid of. Remember, if the screen is not too badly damaged, you can use clear silicone to repair a small tear or hole. If all else fails, call a technician to assist you.
