In the olden days, kitchen accessories were not that important. If you had a knife and spoon and a dish to be used for washing, there wasn't much else you needed to add besides the obvious required stove that you cook on and the pots that you cooked in. But as time went on, kitchens and the people who use them needed much more room and many more utensils to make cooking much easier.
The modern housewife uses the kitchen far less than her counterpart, and often requires the kind of equipment that will cut down the time she has to spend cooking or washing up the dishes. Next to the refrigerator, the dishwasher is probably the next best thing that man made for the kitchen. That is heavy equipment that most kitchens would have.
There are smaller utensils that have changed the way women "slave" over a meal. Primitive cooking and slaving over a meal involved wooden spoons and a lot of elbow grease. To beat an egg and sugar mixture to make a good meringue or a light sponge cake only takes putting the ingredients in their proper quantities into a food processor or automatic mixer and watching it do its job. Nowadays it seems inconceivable that you would prepare any such mixture with a wooden spoon and a china bowl. Not all food processors are the same.
What you have in your kitchen says a lot about the kind of cook you are. The kind of utensils you use also speak volumes about the kind of food you prepare. From the simplest of can openers to the new range bread maker that has made baking bread in an oven sound as primitive as making fire with nothing but wood and some kindling. Equipment changes everyday. It has been a kind of revolution that has led to more kitchen "makeovers" than any other thing you might have in your house. In fact, the kitchen area will undergo more changes than any other part of the house.
Besides doing things better, kitchen accessories also promise a more efficient use of the kitchen itself. But at the rate that they change you might end up with more junk than you really need. It's easy to turn into a junkie always needing the fastest, mixer or the newest dough maker when you already have one or two such things in your kitchen. You should always only buy what you need. If it doesn't serve your needs, it shouldn't be in your kitchen. Having a cluttered kitchen is never a good idea. Remember that you should only buy what you need, not what you want and your kitchen will turn out great.
