Kitchen renovations can be the most expensive home-improvement project a homeowner undertakes. Not because of the furniture itself or the equipment, but how everything fits together and fits into a person's vision. Any upgrading project you do to your home is either done as a labour of love or an unavoidable necessity. It can be costly if you don't do your homework or if you hand it over to someone who doesn't understand your vision. If money is tight then you have to draw up a budget and stick to it. Never overextend yourself, especially if there is a way for you to take the project and break it up into phases. A good place to start is always with cabinetry.
Kitchen cabinets are not only functional but they are probably the only thing that gives your kitchen a distinct character , a style that is further carried to countertops and how appliances fit in the cabinetry configuration and how appliances fit into the space. If style is as much a consideration as functionality then the type of cabinet you choose should not be expensive. Ideally, a cost effective type of cabinet design is one that allows you to make substantial changes without ripping the entire kitchen, one that can be changed easily without much work. It would be nice if you could have a situation where you can change your kitchen as often as you change your house decor, for some people it is a year and for other's it takes a couple of years. That's one way you can remodel your kitchen design without having to take out a home-owner's loan.
A good cabinet design is one that allows you to extend your cabinet space so you maximise the storage space you already and change the aesthetics of the room. First there must be a strong goal driving you to remodelling your kitchen, and then you should know what options you have.
If it's wood you want, you have a wide variety to choose from that include simple pine to heavy oak and maple woods. If cost is a consideration or wood is a scarce commodity then alder and poplar can be glazed over for an antique look. If your kitchen is heavily used then stick with hard woods, not only are they durable but they oak and hickory age quite well. Pine is the cheapest wood that is used in making cabinets. Pine scratches easily and is not suited for a kitchen that is busy. Design options however are not as simple as that. Most contemporary designs use these "cheap" woods to give the same kind of expensive look you get with traditional heavy woods.
