Having heat in a building or home when it's cold outside is critical and can often save lives. That's why a heating structure that distributes warmth within an enclosed area is so important. Central heating systems are built around a primary appliance such as a furnace, which is often located in a basement or attic. However, you should keep in mind that the HVAC system cannot perform to its full potential if there are leaks in your home's foundation (including walls and doors). All furnaces have four main components:
- Burners that deliver fuel
- Heat exchangers
- A blower
- A flue that serves to remove gaseous by products
Depending on the region where the heating system is located and your own preferences, it can run on different types of fuel. Options include gas, oil or a hybrid packaged system, which is a combination of both.
How the Heating System Works
Burners generate combustion gases and then passed over a heat exchanger. This heat exchanger's purpose is to warm the air in your home.
During the hotter seasons of the year, the heating system works in conjunction with your central air conditioning. Like the mechanism that heats air in colder months, the cooling coil refrigerates the air as it passes over it. The cooling coil is usually attached to the exhaust of the furnace. It then sends the cooler air over the same network of ducts that's used when the heating system is at work.
A gravity system is a type of heating unit where the furnace is located near or below the floor. It's deliberately designed this way based on the principle that heat rises. Therefore, this machinery allows warmed air to be lifted through ducts to registers in the floor.
If the furnace is on the main floor of the house, then the heat registers must be positioned high on the walls. This is because the registers need to be higher than the furnace to allow the heat to rise throughout the home.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your heating system is so extremely important. It should be checked at least once a year before the colder months approach. This includes changing filters and checking the ducts. Never rush through this process because it can be trouble than its worth in the long run. Some of the critical areas that need to be monitored include the electrical connections and the thermostat. You should have these checked once every year, especially the thermostat. If your thermostat is off just a little, it could mean that you pay hundreds extra each year. Additionally, it's also essential to make sure no unusual noises are coming from the machinery.
