Unfortunately, Workplace Stress is rampant. Stress from meeting deadlines, working long hours, etc. can really pile up. What's worse is that work-related stress could develop into serious health concerns.
As the body reacts to stress, it releases hormones that produce different bodily processes. One such hormone is noradrenaline. Norepinephrine increases the heart rate and results to vasoconstriction of the peripheral blood vessels. This mechanism is to help force more blood to the vital organs in the body such as the brain and heart. However, it produces health risks when constantly triggered.
Increasing the heart rates means increasing the contractility of the heart muscles. When a person experiences stress on a consistent basis, the heart has to repeatedly contract to compensate. The problem is cardiac muscles get exhausted just like the skeletal muscles used to flex and move the body. Exhaustion of these muscles can cause the heart to fail. A heart that has failed will not pump effectively and would not circulate adequate blood to the whole body.
Vasoconstriction also has negative effects to the cardiovascular system. During such a process, the diameter of blood vessels gets smaller. So, as the blood goes through these contracted vessels, it creates a lot of resistance. Such resistance will damage the vessels and make them incompetent as well. This would again result to an impaired blood circulation. Damaged blood vessels are also more prone to clotting as the cells try to repair the injuries. Clotting could easily develop into a stroke.
To protect a person from possible hemorrhage or fluid loss, another of the body's response to stress is to retain sodium and water. When too much water and sodium stays in the body, it will lead to fluid overload. This would oblige the heart to work harder to be able to circulate the excessive amount of body fluid. Again, the cardiac muscles can wear out and cause heart failure.
Workplace Stress that is not controlled could also bring about an unhealthy weight gain. The body increases the blood glucose level in the bloodstream. This is to provide an individual ready energy to easily act in cases of emergencies. A way in which the body does this is by inhibiting the action of insulin. But, constant stress leads to an excessive production of sugar in the system. Accumulated glucose turns to fat which results to the weight gain.
recurring stress can kill brain cells as well. Since stress hormones become overly secreted, it damages the different parts of the brain. One part of the brain that is affected is the hippocampus. The hippocampus is responsible for people's memory. That is the reason why one cognitive stress symptom is memory difficulties.
In addition to these serious health outcomes, stress speeds up the aging process too. Stress induces collagen loss which is an important skin component in making it look young. As the amount of collagen slowly deteriorates, wrinkles gradually develop.
It is really critical to control stress at work. Not only will Workplace Stress management aid people to be more productive, it would also prevent them from acquiring various health problems.
