Stress Symptoms come in various shapes and sizes. They could be physical, emotional, cognitive or behavioral in nature. But, despite their variety, all of these symptoms boil down to the body's natural reaction to the stress experience.
Some of the common Stress Symptoms which are physical in nature are muscle tension, gastrointestinal disturbances, sleep disturbances and headache.
When an individual is in a stressful situation, a number of hormones are released. In turn, different body mechanisms are activated in response to stress. One event that results is the feeling of tension in the muscles. As the body makes the person react to stress, it shunts more blood to the skeletal muscles to prepare it for necessary actions. For instance, an individual can easily work his leg muscles to run faster in case of a fire.
Gastrointestinal disturbances happen because blood is forced to circulate to the more vital organs like the heart and brain. As less circulation and nerve stimulation goes to the intestinal tract, it produces a sort of discomforting feeling. Typically, people would state that they sense a 'knot' in their bellies. Folks could simply imagine that their gastrointestinal systems have been deactivated so that their body can focus on the more crucial areas.
There is the presence of sleep disturbance as the body increases the wakefulness of a person. This is to augment an individual's mental acuity which again prepares the body for any possible emergency. As already mentioned, more blood is shunted to the brain during stress. Since there will be some kind of fluid congestion in this area of the body, headache occurs.
Emotional Stress Symptoms are also experienced. One explanation for these kinds of symptoms is the involvement of the limbic system in the stress process. The limbic system is the part of the brain that is concerned with the emotions of people. So, when an individual encounters a stressful situation, he may exhibit signs like depression and irritability.
Stress Symptoms could be cognitive in nature. Besides the distraction brought by the emotional factors, cognitive symptoms like poor judgement and memory problems result from the bodily mechanisms. There is feeble judgement as the brain becomes crammed with too much blood. Memory inconveniences occur as another part of the brain called the hippocampus is also affected during stress.
A person in stress would present behavioral symptoms as well. Examples are sleeping too little and loss of appetite. As the body puts an individual into an alert state in times of stress, this causes him to have difficulty in getting sleep. Lack of appetite is caused by the stated deactivation of the gastrointestinal system. Trouble sleeping and decreased interest eating can also be set off by the emotional symptoms of irritability and depression respectively.
There are a whole lot more symptoms that people could go through during stressful circumstances. However, folks need to comprehend that the body is only preparing them to act appropriately in times like emergencies. Stress Symptoms are the body's way of saying that a person needs to start coping with a situation.
