The Established Young Eagles Program, developed and managed by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is the feature article in a Special Report on "Aviation's Next Generation" in the October, 2011 issue of Airplanista Magazine.
"There is no greater responsibility for a licensed pilot than to introduce young people to our glorious aviation world," said Airplanista Editor/Publisher Dan Pimentel. "EAA's Young Eagles Program is the best thing aviation has to spark interest in the minds of young people and get them to start thinking about becoming a pilot later in life. The program is a effective tool we pilots have to make sure new pilots are coming into the system as older ones lose their FAA medical certificates and can no longer fly."
The Young Eagles Program has been responsible for taking 1.6 million young people flying on introductory flights worldwide. These flights are flown by volunteer pilots, who spend their own money on fuel and aircraft costs to make the dreams to fly possible . The program also has a solid aviation curriculum at its core, and offers an almost endless menu of educational opportunities.
The program has gained recent momentum since co-chairmen Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, and Jeff Skiles, the two pilots responsible for the "Miracle on the Hudson" flight, accepted the role to lead the program. Captain Sullenberger makes our concluding point by providing this article's take-away moment: "It is critically important for everyone in GA to become steadfast advocates for aviation," Sully explains, "because there are so many other avenues to which young people can devote their time, their attention, and their resources. All pilots should work to make others aware of the many benefits of general aviation and local airports to our communities. Traveling by private plane or just hanging out at the airport watching airplanes go by is a great way for families to spend quality time together."
Airplanista Magazine is an all-digital monthly new media magazine published online at airplanista.com. The magazine's mission is to celebrate general aviation advocates, activists and volunteers who have devoted their lives to raising the public's awareness about flying and increase the pilot population.
With a tagline of "Sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, always unpredictable.", the magazine presents aviation stories, aviation commentary, and stunning aviation photography each month to a target audience that is a combination of pilots, aircraft owners, professional pilots and those in aviation business and industry.
Each new online issue is offered using a state-of-the-art digital publishing platform that includes Mobile 3.0, allowing iPad, iPhone, Android and Blackberry users to read the magazine without downloading an application.
