What is Live TV?
Live television is a method of broadcasting wherein events are shown in real time. And no, "live TV" - however catchy the phrase is - is not a modern concept. In fact, this form of TV production was the method of choice up until the advent of tape recorders. During this time the majority of TV shows was filmed and broadcasted simultaneously; this is very different from what is often done today where shows are recorded and edited prior to broadcasting. This is not to say, though, that this form of production is not anymore practiced. Live television broadcasts are still done, but are often limited to newscasts and coverage of special events. Also, it is worth noting that today, in an effort to lower the chance of accidents or mishaps from being shown on TV, the airing of live broadcasts is delayed by a few seconds to allow quick content editing.
Live TV on the Internet: The Advantages and Disadvantages
The interest in live television never really waned. On the contrary, with the arrival of Internet or online TV, the demand for "live" broadcasts has never been greater since the invasion of video recorders. Below is a brief discussion of the pros and cons of having live TV on the Internet.
The Advantages
There are three "C"s that can sum up the main benefits of having live TV available online: cost, choices, and censorship. Regarding the first "C", the primary reason people are replacing their cable TV subscription with online TV per se is the latter is - if not free - cheap compared to the former. This means that one does not have to worry about monthly subscription fees or having to pay extra to get more channels.
The second "C" pertains to the fact that, staying true to the nature of the World Wide Web where information is virtually free, online TV provides consumers with a plethora of channels and live broadcasts that meet every and anyone's tastes and needs.
Censorship - or more appropriately, the lack if not the absence of it - is the third advantage. All broadcasting networks employ some degree of censorship to their programs, and that extends even to live broadcasts. That's why as aforementioned, there's a slight delay in airing "live" programs. Watching Live TV programs on Internet TV assures one that the broadcasts are often unedited, raw footages.
The Disadvantages
As with any other online TV programs, the audio and video quality of the live TV programs or broadcasts you would like to watch are reliant on the specifications of your computer or laptop and the speed and reliability of your Internet connection. This means that watching live broadcasts via the World Wide Web can be risky especially if you are using an old model and/or are in an area where the connection is unreliable.
Other disadvantages of subscribing to online TV to get your fill of live television have something to do with the fact that with the huge number of sites providing this service, it can be daunting to find the best one that can meet your needs and preferences.
