Many times people that plant a garden every spring or fall will avoid growing white white potatoes, sweet white potatoes or yams as they take up so much room on the floor when the vines commence to run. Even though you grow bushy tops varieties instead of vine producing, you have to dig them up out of the earth and this can be backbreaking, protracted work. One of the greatest ways to increase your own sweet white potatoes is in containers. You don't plant sweet potatoes from seed, you plant the slips that stem from a mature sweet potato and it is easier than you think. Purchase your slips at a farm supply shop or just pick a few up at your local supermarket and allow them to grow roots in water.
Picking containers for your sweet potatoes is pretty simple. You want them to be at least 2 or 3 feet deep and a minimum of 12 ins diameter to hold one slip. If you want to plant as many as four or five slips per container, then obviously you will want the diameter of the container to be much larger. You will require the container to have adequate drainage since sweet potatoes don't excessive watering, but they must have enough to stay a little damp and keep the vines or tops alive and growing. You can pick out sweet white potatoes with a bushy top or a variety that grows vines. Some individuals like the vines since they're pretty to look at cascading over the sides of their container.
If you select sweet white potatoes that produce vine, you must keep them in check in some manner. You can either elevate your container well off the earth and just let them flow over or use a trellis behind the pot and allow them to grow upwards and dealt with. When harvest time comes, whether you have vines or bush tops, all of your sweet white potatoes will be found near at hand in the container and it is much less hard work to dig them out that way as opposed to out of the earth.
