These are the instructions to install a basic 4 channel DVR security system with cameras at your home or small business. The instruction for an 8 channel DVR will be the same. The only difference is that there will be more cameras to install. Packages are sold in kits and include DVR, cameras and the accessories required to complete a video surveillance system. The only thing lacking is someone to do the installation.
Listed below is the process to do the installation. The items you will need in order to do the installation are a digital video recorder, or DVR, 4 security cameras, the cables to connect the camera or cameras to the DVR.
7 Steps To Installation
1. The first step is to select the location you would like to place the CCTV cameras. You may want to plug the cameras into a portable monitor to see the view before making this decision. This way you will ensure the location of the camera is covering the area you would like to be monitored. Generally speaking, the cameras are located to the far right and left of the home on a cross angle to the front and back yard. It is also important to identify where the DVR will be located. Normal installation is near your PC and Router, although it can be located anywhere you like, it is just a matter of running a Cat 5 cable from the DVR to the router.
2. When deciding the location of cameras it is important to recognize the accessibility to the cameras as well as the DVR. So make sure there is room to run the cables connecting both devices.
3. After locating the equipment run the cable from the cameras to the DVR. The cable is available with connectors already on them in different lengths of 50, 100, and 125 feet. Or you can buy cable and add the connectors. But when purchasing a kit it will come with predetermined lengths of cable and all of the fittings.
4. Next mount the camera or cameras with screws and/ or plastic anchors. Mark each mounting hole with a pencil, and then pre-drill each with a 1/8" bit. If you have wood or metal sections, drill at least one inch and use the proper wood or metal screw to secure the camera.
5. Connect the cable connectors to the camera connectors and at the other end to the DVR and power supply for the cameras. Then connect a cat 5 cable from the DVR to the Router. Then plug in and turn on the DVR and camera power supply. Use a surge protector strip to protect your equipment. Connect the DVR to a network server or a router with a standard network cable.
6. 16-Channel DVR Security System
Install the desktop software on your computer by following the instructions. Set the date and time for the DVR. Choose a name for each camera location, this title appears on the screen to identify each one. Set the DVR using the installation instructions as a guide. This will allow your video to be visible on the network locally and remotely via the Internet.
7. Recording Time for the 4 channel DVR security system.
After installation and the system is running, use the desktop interface to check out the recorded videos. With most of the continuous recording systems you can choose the live view mode. At this point you can adjust the camera for the best view.
The recording capability of the system is determined by the size of the hard drive, recording frame rate and resolution of the cameras. Consult the manual for a table to calculate the recording time of your system. If no tables are included, try a link rate calculator below.
